Bob -
Thanks for coming out and saying it in plain words. Anyone who bought or
upgraded to the MCE operating system instead of buying it installed on their
machine has been misled. Over the past year I thought it was something in my
system, and have spent many, many hours searching for what was preventing me
from buring DVDs directly from MCE.
Now that I know it wasn't just me, I am indeed angry. It also wasn't clear
to me that MCE 2005 can't operate on 64-bit hardware, so I'm doubly mad, as
it really should be able to accommodate dual processors. (Maybe I missed the
fine print somewhere.)
One desperate last attempt - since we can't buy the plug-in retail, can I
buy a new DVD burner that might come with the plug-in software? If so, where
can I find a list of compatible optical drive manufacturers/suppliers?
In the meantime, I'm continuing the labor-intensive process of burning every
DVD through a roundabout data conversion to burn process (Cyberlink's Power
Producer 2 Gold has worked better than Nero for me). Maybe some others like
me can try this as a workaround.

Movie Maker can't burn a movie "directly" to a DVD..
It requires the SonicEncoders plug-in, which is also
required to burn a video DVD from within Media Center.
The Microsoft Media Center software itself does not
include the ability to encode and burn a standard
video DVD (from Movie Maker or Media Center).
This plug-in is something that OEMs may or may not
bundle with their Media Center PCs. And it is not
sold through any retail channels either. The Microsoft
message regarding this capability is confusing, IMO.
And this leaves a number customers confused, frustrated,
and sometimes angry.

I understand that the edition of Movie Maker on an MCE2005 system can burn a
movie directly to a DVD... but Tim's article doesn't make mention of it.
My Toshiba laptop with MCE2003 doesn't have an available upgrade to MCE2005
and I'd like any pointers to info about the feature. Thanks,
PapaJohn
