Re: Installing a 360 Media Center Extender

That means that the Xbox is now able to see the PC and download the MCX
software. The fact that it can't connect suggests that some sort of
networking issue remains. What event do you see in Event Viewer now?

OK ... well, now I get the black screen on my television (finally) that
says
Windows Media Center and contacting...
However, I still get the same error.
I had the UPnP feature turned off on my router and wasn't aware that I had
it turned off. So, at least we are making progress here ...
Just want to get past this black screen and my joy of the 360 will be
expanded.

Correction - are you hitting back/B to move off the 8-digit key page?
(next/okay is fine)
Also, what is the make/model/driver version of the network card in your
PC,
and do you have a second, different model NIC you could try?

Also, are you hitting next/ok on the Xbox to move off of the 8-digit
key
screen? If so, don't do that; instead, let it sit on the screen with
the
8-digit key on it (it will move forward automatically).

So you're looking at a blue-colored screen, not a black-colored
screen?

Well, RTM isn't an option. I'm only a CPP user, so I don't have
access
to the
"final" version. Best I can do is put my pre-order in over at Amazon
and
hope
I get my software in a timely fashion at the end of January. But,
that
doesn't help me for now in my hopes of getting MCE to work.
Basically, I get one screen past the code screen ... the one you have
to
wait on until it's finished configuring. That is where the process
hangs.
Computer sees 360, the 360 sees the computer ... nothing further.
"Todd Bowra [MSFT]" wrote:
As a general statement, the best thing to do is to start with a
fresh
install of Vista RTM as it's entirely possible the issue you're
hitting
is
due to a bug resolved between the build you have and the
final/released
build.
That point aside, what do you see on your Xbox 360 during the setup
process?
How far does it progress past the 8-digit code screen?
(specifically,
do you
ever see a black screen with the Media Center logo on it?)

I've tried enabling/disabling everything possible ... even making
the
system
as unsecure as possible ... to no avail. But, perhaps I'm not
hitting
the
right combo or whatever.
FWIW ... this is one of two issues I'm facing in Vista RC2 (the
other
being
the lack of sound, despite properly installed drivers).

Does that mean you haven't disabled any system services? (not

I've already tried these things and no luck.

The Windows firewall has the notion of a Public profile and a

When your PC is connected directly to the Xbox (effectively
taking it

Please
try directly connecting your PC and Xbox again, but this time
change
the
profile back to private once you've done so; the profile can
be
changed
via
the Network and Sharing Center
Double-checking something else - have you manually disabled
any
services
on
your PC? (various online tweak guides advocate disabling misc.
"unneeded"
services that often actually are needed...)

Hmmm ... what do you mean?
I've directly connected the 360 to the PC. I've connected it
through
my
router. I get the same error either way. It finds the
Extender,
but
it
can't
configure it. I just get that same pesky error code.
My Xbox 360 sees the computer. And, my network actually sees
it. If
I
go
view my Network, it's right there ... Xbox 360 and Icon for
the
360.
So,
I'm
doubting it's anything on the router end and there seems to
possibly
be
something improperly set on my computer itself.
It is a time like this when I wish someone could do that
Dell
thing
and
go
through my computer to check my settings. I'm sure it's
something
not
set
right.

Double-checking - does your "Yeah, I've done that" comment
a

down relate to trying a direct Ethernet connection between

If so, did you manually reset the Windows firewall profile
to
private
after
connecting them?

Yeah, I've done that ... in both cases the Vista is
now
seeing
the
360.
It's
much better than XP was doing (couldn't see it).
But,
when
it
gets
to
the
configuring part ... it hangs:
"An error was encountered while configuring your
computer"
So, I'm figuring some sort of Vista issue.
