Re: Dual Tuner cards

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I broke down and bought the nVidia dual. The picture quality is as advertised
(much better than my previous ATI tuner) butttttttttttttttt, I sure wish they
would explain better how to use the MediaSqueeze technology along with the
Sonic MyDVD that came bundled with the tuner. I tried editing several
recorded TV programs but I found that it took forever to detect the "scenes"
to edit to eliminate the commercials. then right in the middle of of the
third hour the system crashed after all that hard work. ( I don't see a need
to upgrade to the deluxe version for another $70 just because of that. I
guess I'll spring for the $50 for VideoReDo which does a much faster
commercial selection. (though I'll have to figure out how to set that up to
better select just the commercials) cuz it doesn't do an adequate job of that
with my current settings. If anyone has any advice on that I'd sure
appreciate it. I still have to try the different record quality settings in
MCE to determine which will give me the best quality while still making the
file smaller so I can get more than 2 hrs (hopefully more like three or more)
of programming on a DVD-RW. The nVidia user guide suggests that I should be
able to get 4 hrs on a DVD. If anyone can provide advice on that I'd sure
appreciate that too. I KNOW someone reading this has done all the playing
around with it to provide some helpful advice on their experience. TIA

Thanks a bunch to both you and Jaime. I sorta suspected the nVidia was the
way to go. Last time I looked at their website they had it (the one with
remote) maked down $20

I recently installed an Nvidia DualTV MCE. Probably the easiest
install I have ever performed from opening box to using product.

I had two ATI cards in the past. ATI AIW (the original from when I
built my first DVR in 1999). That was a freakin' nightmare. It would
intermittently lock up somewhere between 3min - 50min of recording.
The biggest driver headache I have ever encountered.

I recently upgraded to MS Media Center 2005 and had to switch video
cards to the ATI AIW 2006 and a software encoder. The picture quality
was great and sound was perfect, but it pegged the cpu and the box was
off limits while a program was recording. I wanted a dual tuner
w/hardware encoding.

After reading a myriad of complaints about the Hauppauge 500 switching
from Philips to Samsung tuners, no one "appeared" to be getting good,
if any, picture, so... I decided to go with an Nvidia DualTV. I am
not disappointed. After some tweaking w/deinterlacing, it has turned
out to be the best tuner for me so far in terms of picture quality,
ease of installation, and no crashes or issues whatsoever.

Whites are not blown out as they were before. I can see detail in
blacks... Sound recording is a little on the lower side, but I think
that can be fixed via MCE. I can record two shows at the same time
with less than 20% cpu usage on an AMD 1.6ghz (socket-A) w/1gig ram and
2x 300gig SATA-1.5's.

I don't want to get too winded here, but if you have any more
questions, please feel free to ask.

Also, If anyone else has installed a Nvidia DualTV or a Hauppauge 500,
I would love to know your experiences.

Yes, the both essential have internal splitters. AFAIK, the nVidia has
multiple connection on the backplane of the card, the Hauppauge has only one
set of connectors on the card itself and has a separate set of connectors
that plug into the card and takes up another slot on the back of the PC. If
you're using analog cable (coax), you don't need the second set of
connection on the Hauppauge.

I can't believe nobody has a reply to my question after almost a week. Is
there really no one here who has experience with dual tuner cards? I found
an
aver card too.

I'm thinking of buying one. There seems to be only two that I can
find--Hauppauge and nVidia. The nVidia specs say it has an internal
splitter.
I see where the Haupauge has an additional AV cable. Is this absolutely
necessary? Or does it too have an internal splitter?
Anyone have a recommendation as to which of the two is the better?
