Re: Installing a 360 Media Center Extender

As a general statement, the best thing to do is to start with a fresh
install of Vista RTM as it's entirely possible the issue you're hitting is
due to a bug resolved between the build you have and the final/released
build.

That point aside, what do you see on your Xbox 360 during the setup process?
How far does it progress past the 8-digit code screen? (specifically, do you
ever see a black screen with the Media Center logo on it?)

I've tried enabling/disabling everything possible ... even making the
system
as unsecure as possible ... to no avail. But, perhaps I'm not hitting the
right combo or whatever.

FWIW ... this is one of two issues I'm facing in Vista RC2 (the other
being
the lack of sound, despite properly installed drivers).

Does that mean you haven't disabled any system services? (not sure if you
were referring to public vs. private on direct connect only or that and
checking services)

I've already tried these things and no luck.

The Windows firewall has the notion of a Public profile and a Private
profile, with the former being significantly more locked down (it's
designed
for use when you're connecting to hot spot wireless networks and the
like).
When your PC is connected directly to the Xbox (effectively taking it
off
of
your home network), the firewall will switch to the public profile.
Please
try directly connecting your PC and Xbox again, but this time change
the
profile back to private once you've done so; the profile can be
changed
via
the Network and Sharing Center

Double-checking something else - have you manually disabled any
services
on
your PC? (various online tweak guides advocate disabling misc.
"unneeded"
services that often actually are needed...)

Hmmm ... what do you mean?

I've directly connected the 360 to the PC. I've connected it through
my
router. I get the same error either way. It finds the Extender, but
it
can't
configure it. I just get that same pesky error code.

My Xbox 360 sees the computer. And, my network actually sees it. If
I
go
view my Network, it's right there ... Xbox 360 and Icon for the 360.
So,
I'm
doubting it's anything on the router end and there seems to possibly
be
something improperly set on my computer itself.

It is a time like this when I wish someone could do that Dell thing
and
go
through my computer to check my settings. I'm sure it's something
not
set
right.

Double-checking - does your "Yeah, I've done that" comment a couple
posts
down relate to trying a direct Ethernet connection between the PC
and
Xbox?
If so, did you manually reset the Windows firewall profile to
private
after
connecting them?

No difference.

Yeah, I've done that ... in both cases the Vista is now
seeing
the
360.
It's
much better than XP was doing (couldn't see it). But, when
it
gets
to
the
configuring part ... it hangs:

"An error was encountered while configuring your computer"

So, I'm figuring some sort of Vista issue.

I'm confused. I simply have the 360 directly connected
into
a
router
port.
There was a dialog box that said a Media Extender / Xbox
360
found
...
but,
it can't configure. That's the issue I'm having now.

add/re-add
the
Extender

directly connecting the PC to the Xbox 360 or manually
switch
the
firewall
back to the private profile.

Wow, I had no problems with that combination, but I
have
a
different
router. Vista installed with all defaults, found the
tuners...got
Media
Center set up fine. I then went to the 360 and told
it
to
look
for a
Media
Center...it gave me the code number to enter, I went
to
the
Vista
box
and
it already had a dialog where it wanted that code
number,
then
we
were
good to go.

Now, I _did_ hook the 360 to the network first, and
let
it
go
find
the
xbox live web site and download updates, so I knew
the
connection
from
the
360 to the network was good. You can cable the 360
_direct_
to
your
PC's
network port and try that...assuming that works, then
your
router
is
the
issue. If it fails, then it could be the 360 wired
network
port...have
you
tried the wireless yet?

I'm having trouble getting my Xbox 360 Media Center
Extender
up
and
running.
I've done a clean install of the Vista RC1 Ultimate
Edition.
I've
tried
going
step by step through the process. I just can't seem
to
get
my
Xbox
360
tied
to the computer. Could someone give me a nice
step-by-step
guide
assuming
I
have a clean install, with no AV, Firewall, etc.
installed
other
than
what is
included in Vista.
