Re: How do you use your MCE computer?

Well, actually, the Extender controls the MCE box, not the other way around.
The MCE laptop would have all the music, TV shows, etc. and the Extender can
access that.

I did some research and now understand extenders. This is what I was
missing. An extender will allow me to use my mce laptop to it fullest
potential and still allow my laptop to be portable. I'm getting one as soon
as possible. Can't wait until next summer so I can sit out on the deck and
control my music thru my home stereo using my laptop while outside. Very
cool. Thanks for the help.

different people use thier Media Center PC's differently. The best way
to
use a MC PC is with an extender. In my opinion the Xbox 360 fits that
bill
best. In my home I have my MC PC hooked up in spare room with a TV
hooked
up to my PC so I have the PC monitor and TV pretty close to each other. I
have it set up so that when Media Center opens it opens on the TV. I
have
not been able to situate the PC speaker system so that it works for both
PC
use and TV use so I just roll with it since its not that bad. I am also
using two original Xbox's as extenders (you cant really find the discs
anymore but I have 2) so I have my MC PC extended to my upstairs TV and
the
TV in the main entertainment room. I dont have my 360 hooked up yet to
my MC
PC, (just havent gotten around to it). I have the tuner in mine but only
use
it sometimes or for backups or something I know I have to put on DVD.
the PC
dosnt have HD recording and the two cable boxes I have do.

Bottom line, MC PCs are very flexible and I look forward to getting Vista
at
which time I will probably replace the upstairs Xbox with an Xbox 360 as
I
read the old extenders wont work with Vista.

Having a laptop is a little different but depending on how often you
travel
with or move your laptop your setup can work in quite the same way.

I have a new Dell E1705 laptop that came with media center. I got the
upgraded harddrive, video card, and memory, so I could game on it. Works
great. I am now checking out the MCE software. Had a few issues I'm
working
out with help from the good folks here, but I feel like I'm still just
got
getting MCE.
I don't have a tuner card in the laptop so the tv recording / watching /
pausing tv thing is out. That's ok, I have a DVR anyway.
Questions are:
1 - What about sound? Since its a laptop the speakers aren't good. How
do I
get sound out to my home stereo. I found a cord I have that has a
headphone
jack on one end and rca jacks on the other and I can hook it up that
way,
but I don't think its stereo. So what about sound? Do most just use
there pc
speakers? I have a 5.1 speaker system for my desktop and could use
those,
but it seems to defeat the purpose cause I'd have to move them out into
the
living room where the HDTV is and use that instead of my stereo. That
doesn't make sense to me. How do you do it?
2- What about video? I can use the s video option and send video out to
my
tv and use the remote, that's cool, but it requires me to put my laptop
right next to the tv so the cords reach. What if you had a desktop with
MCE.
Does everyone have to set up there computer right next to the TV to use
mce
and video on the tv? I see ads, commercials, and pics of people using
mce on
there tv with the remote and no where in those ads do I see a computer
set
up next to the tv. And besides most put there computer in another room,
not
next to the tv in the living room. Doesn't make sense to me. What am I
missing. How do you do it?

Thanks,
Phil
