Re: Installing a 360 Media Center Extender

Double-checking - does your "Yeah, I've done that" comment a couple posts
down relate to trying a direct Ethernet connection between the PC and Xbox?
If so, did you manually reset the Windows firewall profile to private after
connecting them?

No difference.

You mentioned in a different thread having OneCare installed, but
disabled.
Please try temporarily uninstalling it to see if that makes a difference.

Yeah, I've done that ... in both cases the Vista is now seeing the
360.
It's
much better than XP was doing (couldn't see it). But, when it gets
to
the
configuring part ... it hangs:

"An error was encountered while configuring your computer"

So, I'm figuring some sort of Vista issue.

It's possible that your router is misbehaving and dropping
necessary
traffic. Temporarily connecting your PC directly to your Xbox 360
using
an
Ethernet cable (bypassing your router) will allow you to confirm if
this
is
the case.

I'm confused. I simply have the 360 directly connected into a
router
port.
There was a dialog box that said a Media Extender / Xbox 360
found
...
but,
it can't configure. That's the issue I'm having now.

Note that when you directly connect your Xbox 360 to your PC,
the
Windows
Firewall will automatically switch to the public (more
restricted)
profile
because of the absense of a DHCP server. In order to get your
Extender
connected in this state, you'll either need to add/re-add the
Extender
after
directly connecting the PC to the Xbox 360 or manually switch
the
firewall
back to the private profile.

Wow, I had no problems with that combination, but I have a
different
router. Vista installed with all defaults, found the
tuners...got
Media
Center set up fine. I then went to the 360 and told it to look
for a
Media
Center...it gave me the code number to enter, I went to the
Vista
box
and
it already had a dialog where it wanted that code number, then
we
were
good to go.

Now, I _did_ hook the 360 to the network first, and let it go
find
the
xbox live web site and download updates, so I knew the
connection
from
the
360 to the network was good. You can cable the 360 _direct_ to
your
PC's
network port and try that...assuming that works, then your
router
is
the
issue. If it fails, then it could be the 360 wired network
port...have
you
tried the wireless yet?

I'm having trouble getting my Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
up
and
running.
I've done a clean install of the Vista RC1 Ultimate Edition.
I've
tried
going
step by step through the process. I just can't seem to get my
Xbox
360
tied
to the computer. Could someone give me a nice step-by-step
guide
assuming
I
have a clean install, with no AV, Firewall, etc. installed
other
than
what is
included in Vista.

Am running on a Linksys wired router. Have put the port
information
there.
FWIW ... on an earlier install I got it to see the 360, but
than
it
couldn't
configure it.

Hopefully someone can help me get up and running, so that I
can
finally
enjoy the Media Center Experience on my television.
