Re: Setup Error when connecting Xbox 360 to MCE2005 PC

Thanks for the detailed write-up; it makes troubleshooting much easier.
Please try the following:
1) From the Start menu, select Run and type "services.msc" <enter>
2) Right click the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service and
select Start
3) Attempt to add your Xbox 360 again via the Media Center Extender Manager

Also, as an aside - because the PC and Xbox are both on the LAN side of your
router, there's no need to open ports in your router in order to enable
Extender functionality.

Setup Error when trying to connect new XBox 360 with Media Center Edition
2005 (rollup 2) computer.

Config:
* Wired Cat5e (100MBit/s) LAN and high speed Internet access; no wireless
components involved.
* Netgear WGT624v3 gateway/router with latest upgrades.
* PC with Windows Media Center Edition 2005, Rollup 2, .NET Framework 1.1
and 2.0, all security patches and MCE patches as of today.
* Norton/Symantec Internet Security 2005 with latest upgrades.
* All of the above has been working great and without problems for about a
year (and still do).
* Newly purchased XBox 360 Premium.

Problem:
Want to use MCE Extender capabilities of XBox 360 together with Media
Center
PC, but receive the Setup Error (stating problems with the firewall
settings
of the Windows Firewall).

Action taken:
* PC and XBox 360 are assigned fixed IP addresses on LAN (192.168.0.2 and
192.168.0.6) in gateway/router.
* XBox 360 is successfully connected to router and successfully fetched
and
installed an update from Microsoft (manufacturing date of XBox is April
2006).
- All network settings in XBox 360 appear to be accurate (IP number,
gateway, subnet, etc.).
- Testing of XBox Live settings under Systems tab works fine (all tests
pass).
- Testing of Network settings under Systems tab works fine (all tests
pass).
- Can successfully connect to PC (successfully tried both Windows Media
Connect 2 and Media Player 11) and stream audio and watch pictures.
* Software firewall (Internet Security 2005) configured according to
Microsoft KB911728 for opening ports and allowing traffic to/from XBox
360.
- These settings work with the PC connect feature on the XBox 360.
* Hardware firewall (router) ALMOST configured according to Microsoft
KB911728
- Using port forwarding for named ports.
- Unable to configure ports listed as RANDOM (HOW IS THIS DONE?!)
- (Netgear refers to Microsoft on this issue)
- Discussion with Xbox support didn't lead anywhere, despite
conversations
with all kinds of supervisors (I seriously doubt they know how to tie
their
shoelaces).
* Problem with MCE setup persists with both Windows Media Connect 2 and
the
newer Media Player 11 (which replaces WMC2).
* Problem with MCE setup persists both with IS2005 enabled and disabled.
* Have tried both LITE and FULL versions from www.xbox.com/pcsetup - both
fail at the exact same place: Setup Error.
- The user group MCRD Users is not created by neither LITE/FULL.
- User used for installation has Administrator privileges.
- Have verified and successfully manually created MCRD Users group with
same user.
* Have verified all services settings as suggested in various forums
(UPnP,
HTTP SSL, etc.)
* Fast user switching is enabled.
* Remote Desktop Connection / Terminal Services Client is installed
(obviously).

DvcConn.log extract below (all earlier entries are the exact same, except
for time stamps).

Please advise.

Best regards,

Fredrik
