My Media Center isn't as DUM as yours I guess since mine has a manual set the channel, set the start time, set the end time. Just like that one you have with the 1200 blinking hahaha

Hello,

My problem, it often happens that at the end of the day the tv-shows are behind schedule what means that they start later, so they also end later. What happens a lot of my shows are missing the end of their show 5, 10 or 30 minutes.

I've looked all over the Internet for a solution and I found out that by editing the registry it was possible to set a value for post-time of a tv-show. So I opened up the registry-editor went to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\VideoSettings\RecordingSoftPostPadding and gave it the value 4756 decimal wich corresponds to 1 hour and 20 minutes. Then I rebooted my PC to get the changes take place. Due to the information I found on the Internet every show should from now on record 1 hour and 20 minutes longer than the time in the guide.

Result: The shows recorded only till the endding time of a TV-show as the guide mentions. And it either doesn't record the 4 minutes longer as you can set up in the Media Center settings. I even found out that sometimes the shows miss the last 10 minutes of their show, so instead of longer recording it records shorter?!?

I also found a key RecordingSportsHardPostPadding, I set this one also to 4756 decimal and this didn't make a difference either.

What's happening, and what am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
I have the same problem with MCE and my cable box/dvr. After missing the end of the Masters (Golf) I bought a DUM for recording critical shows.

DUM A Dumb User-friendly Machine, commonly called a VCR. An Analog recording device which can be detected by the blinking time display in a home theater, due to the user's inability to program it. It is however, capable of recording the user's selection of channels and start/stop times. It has been replaced by very expensive Digital Video Recorders (DVR), and even more expensive computer based versions which perform the same functions-with the exception of start/stop times, and are less user-friendly.

It's too bad that the program info can't be encoded into the VBI like the captioning, teletex, and news and other IP broadcast information is currently.

I was not joking above. I have two MCEs with three tuners, and my digital box is a dual tuner DVR. I losing the end of the masters (in HD on my cable box, and also on one MCE, I did purchase another 2 VCR/DVD machines (cheap right now, due to phasing out soon) to add through a splitter on my digital cablebox. My OnDemand (Comcast) still works through the splitter!

An alternative solution is to record the shows before and after, as well as the one you want!

--------------Caution-ranting follows----------------
I do have an old W98SE machine with an ATI-All In Wonder which WILL record like a VCR (channel +start/stop times), and an older W98 with a capture card which worked on '95, but broke with W98, EVEN WHEN MSTV WAS NOT INSTALLED the interface used by ATI was replaced with the MSTV version, which required a replacement card to record again. I guess this was the start of the "We know what you want!" program.

Other issues I have are:

"Internet Ready"-Just add another firewall, virus checker, spyware checker, and registry fixer before connecting to the internet-all of which need to be purchased, and also require yearly license fees.

Come on! This is after 4 years of the "Trusted Computer Initiative"? Perhaps that only means that M$ also sells a virus checker-which will also be available for VISTA, which was developed under the initiative!

Gary

You are right! To set a custom recording start at "recorded tv" (which is a logical place to someone :-) and click on "add recording".

This will do what the poster wanted, and for what I want also!

Thanks for the reminder about M$ menus being "intuitive". I "guessed" it was for adding a link to "recorded tv" and never looked at it since then...
