Hi there, I am about to buy a Sony 40W2000 LCD TV and want to connect
my MCE HDPC to it via a DVI to HDMI cable - no problems there, but it
looks like the Sony doesn't have a separate audio in connector, so what
I'd need is a cable that takes both video and audio from the PC (using
DVI and a 3.5mm audio plug) and converts that to a single HDMI plug for
the TV.

I will be getting a separate AV Receiver fairly soon, but not right
away, and I know that is the "correct" and best solution - my PC has a
nice S/PDIF out that will be used for that.

Anyone know if I can source such a cable in the UK?

Cheers,
Andy

To do this, you need a converter to take the digital audio output from your
PCs soundcard and add it to the DVI digital video and then send both down an
HDMI cable.

I have seen such a beast but it would be about £200 (it is far from a 'mere'
cable).

... Just found one of the ones I was thinking of go here
http://www.lektropacks.com/view_item.php?product=1000550&&category=149 this
one is available in the UK and is only £175

I have seen another from Gefen (an American manufacturer) but last I checked
it was still not shipping. See
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=3570

I am looking for one that has a fibre-optic TOS Link rather than the above
which have an SPDIF coax connector.

I have looked at the KDL-40W2000 specs (go here
http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=KDL-40W2000&site=odw_e
n_GB&pageType=TechnicalSpecs&category=TVP+LCD+TV ) and it does have an
analogue audio input next to the PC VGA connector. However this might not be
active when the HDMI connector is selected.

I am in [almost] exactly the same situation as you, except I plan to buy a
KDL-40X2000 and an AV receiver.

I am using the standard soundcard-out at the moment, and as suggested
to me on avforums, one of the HDMI inputs has an analogue sound in, and
it works fine. I wouldn't spend £175 just to get digitial sound -
that money is better spent on an AV Receiver IMHO. Can't find anything
I like in that department for £500 at the moment, so I will wait until
new products appear or prices drop.

Cheers,
Andy
