Try to boot the system from the MCE disk to see if the system can boot at
all. If the existing drive is discovered properly in the bios it is possible
that the existing drive was damaged when you installed the old drive. If it
boots from the MCE disk you could rewrite the MBR to rule that out as the
cause.

I no longer want to use the old drive (which I suspect doesn't work and
which
I will destroy after this dilemma is fixed), so how to fix this problem
with
this knowledge? The computer won't boot even after I remove the old drive
and
set everything as before.
Help.

Hi all...please help!
After plugging in an old harddrive (to see if it was working) to my
current
computer thru the IDE cable shared with the existing harddrive, my
computer
no longer boots up WinXP. All I get after the American Megatrends bios
startup is a dark screen with a flashing cursor. The bios is working
properly: it's detecting my harddrive and cd&dvd players, I'm able to
access
the bios and such...
Also note that I remove the jumpers on the old harddrive when I plugged
it
in.
Please help me. Tell what to do, provide links or addresses, etc.
Thanks in advance.
JH
The old drive needs to be pinned as Slave or CS (cable select) dependent
on
how the other drive is pinned. Also if the other drive is setup CS you
need
to hook up the cable correctly.
