Re: Video Error

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

JW,

Initially I had an ATI Radeon 7000 card with 32M of ram. That ran Vista
RC1, without Aero. At that time I would get "VIDEO ERROR" trying to watch TV
or DVD from MediaCenter.

I upgraded to an ATI Radeon 9550 card with 128M of ram made by VisionTek.
That allowed me to use the Aero interface. I still can't watch TV or DVD
from MediaCenter, but not I get the DECODER ERROR instead. I tried Media
Player just to see if it could play a DVD, but get the memory error message.

My system is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX560 with 512M of ram, 40G drive, Hauppauge
WinTV PVR-150 and DVD-RW drive.

Since the PVR-150 and DVD-RW drive both stream MPEG, it sounds like my woes
are all due to some issue with the MPEG decoder. I think I can verify this
by playing a AVI or other format video in MediaPlayer and possibly
MediaCenter, but I haven't tried that yet.

Another option would be to install the Hauppauge TV application, possibly.

Not enough memory can also be referring to disk space or to available
virtual memory.
How much memory do you have on your 9550 card?
Do I also understand that every thing worked fine in Visa before you changed
video cards? What card did you have before and what drivers are you using
for the 9550 card?
I have you tried running WinUpdate on Vista or checked the ATI Website to
see if there is a more recent ATI RC1 driver. I don't recall if the 5.11
driver is that latest for RC1. I believe there was a later one released
close to the release date of RC1.
Are you saying that you do not get the memory error when playing the same
DVD with MCE instead of Media Player?.
515MB of main memory is certainly enough I have run both Media Player and
MCE to play DVDs in Vista with 512MB or Ram.

I ran that and it did show a Microsoft mpeg decoder.

Can you think of anything else to check?

The only other thing I wonder about is the fact that I only have 512M of
ram. When I run Media Player (not Media Center) to view a DVD, I get an
error about not enough memory and shutting down applications to free
memory.

Vista Media Center stores its default decoder settings in a different
place
in the registry than XP.

In Vista the key is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media
Center\Decoder

whereas in XP the key was
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media
Center\Service\Video

(The actual value names in the keys are the same):
PreferredMPEG2AudioDecoder and PreferredMPEG2VideoDecoder

But the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility, for me, does show
which decoders are installed. It's "Set as Preferred" and Restore
Defaults" functions, do not change the Vista registry entry.

I tried that, and no difference. Not too surprising since the decoder
error
happens when I try to watch live TV (with the tuner card) OR play a
DVD.

Is there some way to verify that the Vista RC1 Decoder is installed?
Or
reinstall it?

I suggest that you try the latest Vista Beta driver from the Hauppauge

from
windows update, and the ATI 9550 driver that came with Vista,
version
7.15.11.0.

Any idea what the Decoder error might be caused by?

There is a built in MPEG2 decoder in Viata Premium/ultimate so I am
surprised that you are getting a decoder err.r.

I just replaced the video card with a Radeon 9550 card. I can run
Aero
now,
which is pretty cool. When I try using the media center to watch
tv
with
my
Hauppauge Win TV-PVR150, I get a different error now:

Decoder Error
The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed.
Please
restart
Windows Media Center or the computer.

Any ideas?

I think the video card/driver I have are DX8, but that was
enough

the

that came with the card, however.

Doug,

I verified that the Hauppauge card is listed under the
Sound
Video
and
Game
Controllers, and it has driver version 2.0.43.24108
installed.
That's
the
latest version posted on the Hauppauge web site.

I was able to install the XP drivers for my Radeon 7000.
On
the
plus
side,
my performance index for graphics went up from 1.0 to 1.9.
Plus
I
can
run
native resolution on my LCD monitor again.

However I still get the same video error message on trying
Media
Center.
Does that make sense? I'll try again when I get the Radeon
9600,
but I
hope
I'm not wasting time for an installation issue - i.e. there
is
some
component
of Vista that needs to be installed still.

You need to ensure you have two things installed.

1) The appropriate MCE compatible tuner drivers for
Vista.
There
are
drivers for the Hauppauge cards on Windows Update, they
are
listed
as
Optional updates. Or you can use the drivers found here:

ftp://ftp.shspvr.com/download/wintv-pvr_150-500/inf/pvr_2.0.48.24258_vista_whql.zip

More info here:

2) Visit ATI's web site and download the latest Vista
beta
drivers
for
your
video card.

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBList.asp?folderID=5713

These driver are listed as compatible with Vista RTM. They
may
not
work,
or
work well with RC1.

All is working well, except I can't watch TV. though I

Under
