Re: Here is what MS says about MCE 2005 and XP Pro

Re threaded discussion for HP WMCE 2005 CD upgrade..HP NO longer stocks and
refuses to cooperate in any manager assistance, even when we as consumers get
bumped up to outsourced Indian tech support supervisor (formerly known as a
Total Care supervisor) They will only restore your HP PC to whatever version
of MS S/W was originally installed without ANY EXCEPTIONS WHATSOEVER !!They
are only making new PC's with MCE 2005 with an embedded XP Pro program as it
is not a complete XP Pro install. In the past the HP XP Pro came EITHER
installed as OEM software WITH absolutely NO CD backup or OS CDs for 2002-3
PC's. The late 2003 and all 2004 MCE units had 2004 installed with XP Pro and
option of Basic Office 2003 (Office 2003 cames with the 2003 OC's as well.--
) I have been fighting with HP and with this specific topic for over 2.5
YEARS! I'll NEVER buy another HP with any MCE software. i purchased the HOP
WMCE 2005 upgrade from HP in late 2004 and 3 times after attempting to
install & run, my PC has always crashed requiring me to wipe the drive &
start all over again with 2001-2003 O/S & software on my CUSTOM-BUILT HP MCE,
I'll not try again. Does anyone know how to upgrade exisiting HP's version of
MCE2004 to 2005 wuth the HP upgrade CD. I want to be able to use all the new
MS features, downloads and Windows LIVE progammable updates. However almost
ALL require MCE 2005 (absolutely). HP has not & will not help. They just wait
until your warranty (I have had 3 extra yrs. in a purchased Warranty but that
has NOT made a single difference. Has ANYONE EVER successfully UPGRADED HP's
MCE 2004 with XP SP2 and all current critical updates installed ? I use my
MCE PC for writing, composing, recording MIDI and digital pipe music -
recommended for the new sophosticated digital with pipe organs. & also to
backup my 350 pipe-organ CD collections and other special broadcast
recordings from the web. I sincerely hope someone can help as this PC was a
2500 custom PC but has never worked beyond the 2003 software without
corrupting ALL my data or.?
This is my very first posting--please forgive the length. Thanks to all.
It's at least a bit comforting to be aware of 100's of others struggling with
the identical or simiolar probelm with HPs PC's. All comments or step by step
assistance will be graciosuly received!

If I recall correctly, Installing SP2 on an MCE 2002 machine will upgrade it to 2004. It does not do the same for MCE 2004 going to 2005.

doesn't installing service pack 2 for xp updates the MCE 2004 to MCE 2005?
I thought I read this someplace.

You get the MCE 2005 upgrade from your computer manufacturer. As far as I
know, HP is no longer offering it, but I'd call anyway and insist on it.
Keep asking for the next supervisor until you get it. Don't hesitate to
tell them that you've bought your last HP, unless they deliver.

I can't find any information on upgrading MCE 2004 TO MCE 2005. I just got
my
new computer last Christmas (2004) and find my MCE to be outdated already
(in
the car industry the introduce the 2005 models about a year in advance!).
Am I eligible for an upgrade or am I going to have to buy it already?
Do I get it from MS, or my computer manufacturer (HP)?
Is the upgrade worth the time and trouble?

However, if you are updating MCE 2004 with 2005, and it is already a
member
of a domain, it will remain as such. Or, if you're doing a fresh install
of
2005 (not an upgrade), and you choose to set up the domain during the
install process it will join a domain.

Following is a quote from the MCE FAQs on the Microsoft.com
Web site
"
Q. Can I connect a new PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition
2005 to a work network or domain?
A. While you can access network resources on a work network or a
domain, you cannot join a Windows XP Media Center 2005 PC to the
domain.
PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are designed
specifically
for home use. Professional features, specifically Domain Join and
Cached
Credentials (Credentials Manager for logins) are not included. As a
result, you will be prompted for your login username/password to access
network resources after a reboot or logging back into the PC. In
addition,
file shares or network resources set to require a domain-joined PC for
access will not be available. Remote Desktop and Encrypting File System
support are still included.

Q. What about consumers upgrading from Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2004? Will they lose these features?
A. No. Consumers who are eligible for an upgrade to Media Center
Edition 2005 will keep these features as they were a part of their
originally purchased product.

Yes, it does. Can you cite information to the contrary?

MCE 2005 does not contain the complete XP pro program as did previous
MCE releases. The principle function missing is the ability to be a
member of a Domain which is a feature normally only used in a
Business
computer center environment.

Media Center Edition machines are Windows XP Pro in the operating
system. You've already got it.

I have a new PC with Windows Media Center Edition 2005 installed and
want to
upgrade to XP professional. Can I do this and will I still have
the
benefits
of both MCE and Professional?
