Re: Locate Computer on Network

Hi, Thanks for the reply. When I right-click on a folder on the XP Pro
machine, there is no "Security" tab. When I right-click on a folder, the
permissions are accessed thru the "Sharing" tab. Should the "Security" tab be
there? What would make it be not there? Does this indicate a problem? How to
fix?
The MS Tech Support pages show pictures of this "Security" tab, but it
doesn't appear on my system.
Thanks,
Tom

It sounds like you gave the user from B permission on A, but you also need.
to add him to the "Security" (tab) on the same window as you gave
permission, did you do that? Without giving a user permissions and security
it will not work.

Hi David, Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested and it didn't
appear to work. On A I created a user account with the exact same name,
password and rights as on B. Then I gave only that user permission to use
a
folder on the boot drive on A (NTFS format drive). Then I went to B and
located the shared folder under the network. But it refused access. It
said I
don't have permission to use that folder.
Did I do something wrong? Why can't I select a user on B (from A) and give
them permission to use a folder on A? Why do I have to re-create that same
user on A? That seems a strange way to solve this problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Basically you create a user on A that uses the same user name, and
password
as the log on for B, or recreate the user account for B on A. You do this
first in Control Panel, User Accounts.

Hi,
I have XP Pro SP2 installed on my main PC (A) at home and 3 XP Home SP2
laptops (B, C & D). All are up-to-date. Simple file sharing on A is
turned
off. Boot disk on A is NTFS. All PCs can see each other thru the wifi
network
and all can get to the internet thru the router (NAT). I'm trying to
set
it
up so B can access one of the folders on A, but not C or D. When I go
into
the folder permissions on A and try to give permission to a user on B,
B
does
not show up on the selection list. Only A shows up on the list.
How do I get B to show up on the selection list so I can give one of
the
users on B permission to use the folder on A?
"Select object type ... From this location" When I hit the "Locations"
button, only A appears. How do I get B, C & D to appear?
If I left out any key details, let me know.
Thanks,
Tom
