John - once again - this is a great help.
We've only had NTL in for the last week - so our trial period has some time
to go.
The NTL box is probably new (it's a Samsung SMT-2110C).
The engineer came back again today (because there was some other problem
with the TV signal). he recommended getting a Digi-sender from Argos (I think
this may be it: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5345904.htm
). Do you think that might work?
Interested in your views on NTL vs. Sky - what do you think NTL miss?
What do you have (I guess you are UK based?)
Does the Samsung use IRDA?
Really appreciate your help with this.
Rgds

No the Sky TV Link (Magic Eye) is as its name suggests only for use with the.
Sky boxes.
Firstly you need to be aware that to original NTL/Telewest digital cable
boxes did not use standard IR signals (like your TV and Sky), but instead
used IRDA. I don't know if this still applies to the new Telewest Teledrive
box.
For NTL/Telewest the approach would be as follows -
1. Run a UHF cable
2. Buy a a suitable IR system, see http://www.redremote.co.uk/ you will
probably need a RedEyeRemote (to convert standard IR to IRDA) and then a
wireless sender
The layout for the IR setup would be roughly as follows
PC (with Microsoft IR emitter)
to
Standard wireless IR repeater/sender
to
Standard wireless IR receiver (paired to above)
to
RedEyeRemote converter (to convert to IRDA)
to
NTL/Telewest box

PS. I don't rate NTL/Telewest, they miss a lot of things compared to Sky.

John - thanks for these suggestions. This is getting close to how I thought
it could be solved.
One thing I forgot to mention is that we switched provider when we moved. We
are now no longer with Sky - but are now with NTL - will your proposed
approach work with them? Do the Sky TV link products work with NTL? I
couldn't find any NTL products when I searched on the digiboxshop site.
Also - how does the UHF cable work when I run it from the lounge to the
study? The cable I had previously connected from the PC to the TV (I think it
was an s-cable or something). Where would I plug the UHF cable into (at both
ends)?
Nearly there...!

I had Windows XP Media Center on my PC next to my TV in the lounge in my old
appartment. Everything worked wonderfully well. Connected PC to SkyTV box to
change channels (using remote control & by PC when recording) & connected PC
to TV to record programs.
Now in my new house I want PC in the study & the TV in the lounge. What are
my connectivity options? Cables aren't long enough & can't drill holes
through (rented house) walls anyway.
Please help.
Thanks.

Having the Sky box in the study (den in US speak) and keeping it connected
to the PC, and then adding an Xbox 360 as an MCE extender in the lounge is
certainly one way to do it. The Xbox can use Wireless Ethernet to talk to
the PC or the new Ethernet over Power cables.
Another way, would be to have the Sky box next to the TV and run a UHF cable
to the study from it. You then also need to have a "Sky TV Link" (also known
as a Magic Eye) in the study (see
http://www.thedigiboxshop.com/sky_remote_senders_products.html ) so the IR
blaster on your PC can send (via the Sky TV Link) commands to the Sky box to
change channel.
A Sky box has two UHF connections, one would be used (in my suggested
approach) to connect to the TV next to it in the lounge, and the other run
to the study. You need to set an option in the Sky box to turn on power for
the Sky TV Link.
A third approach would be to use two Sky boxes (also known as Sky Multi
Room).
