Problem Solved!
I couldn't wait until the weekend, so after work yesterday I went in to the
store with the questionable remote receiver and plugged it in to a MCE PC
that they had on the floor.
Beofre plugging the unit in, I noted that they had an identical unit built
in. It appeared in Device Manager as an eHome receiver...worked fine. So, I
plugged mine in and got the same error there as I did at home.
It would appear my unit was somehow truly malfunctioning, and they gave me a
replacement receiver which I brought home, plugged in, and is working just
peachy.
If anyone has this problem in the future, they key appears to be the 'blank'
device ID: if you see something like that in Device
Manager('VID_0000&PID_0000') then you may well have a defective unit. Take
it back to the store, prove it fails in the same way there, and you should be
able to get a replacement!
Cheers,

question, but I'll take a stab at it here: I have recently upgraded my
Shuttle SS51G XPC with a brand-new 320GB HD, and then installed a fresh copy
of Windows XP Media Center 2005.
The MCE came with a MSFT Remote Control and Receiver 1.0a (model: 1040) but
when I plug it in to a USB port, either in front, in back, by itself, or in
concert with other various USB devices, I only get an error indicating 'USB
Device Not Recognized'.
When I go into the Device Manager, I can see that there is an 'Unknown
Device' entry in the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' section. In devi9ce
status it states that 'No drivers are installed for this device.', and if I
go to the details tab, device instance ID field, it says:
'USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&36C701F9&0&9'
Done so far:
- I tried plugging the device into a different PC, a regular XP
Professional/SP2 install, with the same behavior.
- I have reinstalled MCE three times now, both with the device plugged in
during install, and without the device plugged in until after all patches
have been applied, to no effect.
- I have looked through a variety of newsgroup solutions for general IR
device problems (in particular, applying the MCE rollup patch KB Q900325
followed by Q912024) but none has altered this problem behavior.
- Tried manually moving ir-related .sys & .inf files per a solution I found
on a blog, to no effect. (sortry, can't find the URL with the specifics of
that process)
- The Shuttle SS51G has the latest available BIOS, has USB 2.0 patch applied
per manufacturers recommendations, and has no issues with any of the other
USB devices I have plugged into it.
At this point, not sure what to do - is there any way to diagnose from this
problem description whetherthe IR receiver itself is bad, or malfunctioning?
The remote control has fresh batteries, buttons seem to work fine, and when I
click a button (and the receiver is plugged into a USB port) I can see a red
light going in whenever I push a button on the remote.
I don't fully understand how USB devices are detected and drivers installed,
but I guess I am a little suspicious about the device ID of
'VID_0000&PID_0000'. Almost seems like there is some data missing inside the
reciever that is causing the problem....i.e., values of '000' literally mean
it has no ID and thus OS has no way to determine what the heck device it is?
I'm planning on taking it back to the store over the weekend and swapping it
into any MCE cPCs they have on the floor, to see if it works there....but
hey, always worth seeing if anyone here has seen the same problem.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
-->Karl
