Where did you delete the shortcut from? By default, the MCX user will also
look for pictures/shortcuts in c:\Documents and Settings\mcx<#>\My
Documents\My Pictures and c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My
Pictures

actually, the problem might not be the picture cache.
it looks like it still has the path to where the images are, and it
regenerates them.
i had put a shortcut to the old image directory in 'my images', then i
deleted the shortcut,
but it looks like it has cached off that directory path.
not sure how where to get rid of that ...

how do i delete the cache for 'my pictures' on an extender (xbox 360)?
i tried deleting the following files, but the old preview images are
still on the extender ...
C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Pictures\ehthumbs.db
C:\Documents and Settings\MCX1\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\ehome\Image.db
what else should i do?
