Re: Save password function in MCE

As you've found, the disabled caching is an effect of disabling the domain capabilities. The reason for the convoluted process is the permissions on the registry value in question. By default, no user on the system can edit that value. By creating a copy of the hive the permissions aren't transferred to the copy. I got around this, originally, by using a Bart's PE CD with the same effect, just a bit quicker and more elegant :-)

Have just completed the steps as described on that third party site, and it
worked incredibly well and does exactly what was required.

First class that was.

My question is though, why could you not just edit the same key in the
exsisting system hive without replicating, copying and replacing...

Is it not the same to just edit the key, and reboot without the XP Recovery
Console?

Worked great though :)

Cheers Doug!

Doug,

Very interesting! Will these indeed just enable the save password
functionality, as I don't need this particular install to join a domain in
that sense... but is that all part of the same sceanario?

Thanks for your quick assisatance.
