Re: Xbox 360 with XP Media Centre 2005 Connectivity Issue

As I have previously explained, this only stopped working once I had applied
the 50-odd critical patches for XP that have been released since XP-SP2. As
previously stated, this worked fine beforehand.
Anyway, rather than go round in circles with this, I rebuilt my PC with
Vista Home Ultimate RC1 and Media Center now works better than it ever has
done before. The Xbox 360 connects to it every time so I'll stick with that
going forward.
Thanks for your help

First off - which third-party firewall/intrusion detection/privacy/parental.
control software do you have installed? Based upon the experience of others
in the newsgroup, it appears that some software packages will block traffic
even when set to "disabled". The best place to start is to configure
whatever software you have to allow MCX traffic. Details at the below link:
General:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/firewall/config.mspx
McAfee:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/firewall/mcafee.mspx
Norton:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/firewall/norton.mspx
ZoneAlarm:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/firewall/zonealarm.mspx
If that doesn't do it, other things to do/check:
- Open a command window (Start --> Run --> "cmd" <enter>) then type "netsh"
<enter>, "winsock" <enter>, "show helper" <enter>, then paste the output
here
- Open services.msc (Start --> Run --> "services.msc" <enter>) and check the
status of the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play Device
Host service (are they running?)
- Temporarily connect your Xbox 360 directly to your PC using an Ethernet
cable to bypass your home router and start fresh:
.. First, do the following on your Media Center PC:
.. 0) Go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup and re-download the Media Center
Extender software
.. 1) Uninstall the Media Center Extender software by going to Add/Remove
Programs under the Windows Control Panel
.. 2) Delete the DvcConn.log and DvcSetup.log files from c:\windows on
your Media Center PC
.. 3) Reboot your PC
.. Next, do the following on your Xbox 360:
.. 1) Go to the Xbox 360 dashboard-->System blade (purple
area)-->Computers-->Windows Media Center and choose "Disconnect"
.. 2) Back out to the top-level of the dashboard, go to the Media blade
(blue area), select Windows Media Center and continue forward
.. to get a new 8-digit code; write this code down
.. Finally, return to your PC and do the following:
.. 1) Install the MCX software and when prompted, type in the 8-digit
setup key you wrote down above
If you still run into issues, please post the following:
- the contents of the new DvcConn.log and DvcSetup.log files
- the IP address of your Xbox 360
- the results of an ipconfig /all from your PC (paste in everything it
displays)
- the results from checking for winsock helpers (paste in everything it
displays)

First off - yes, Xbox 360 will function as an Extender with Windows Vista
RC1 in all regions.
Regarding your connectivity issues - what does your network topology look
like? Specifically, how does your Xbox connect back to your PC?
(makes/models of routers/switches/hubs in between would be helpful)

Hi all,
I've recently installed a Media Centre PC at home primarily to allow my
Xbox360 to act as a Media Extender. Everything worked fine for a while
until
I decided to change my connection on the Xbox from wireless to wired
Ethernet. From that point, the Media Extender on the Xbox could not
connect
to the PC. Saying that, Xbox live would always connect to the internet
from
the Xbox from both the wireless and wired Ethernet connections.
Now, I've rebuilt the Media Center PC from scratch and the Xbox was
able
to
connect again (once running the extender manager setup for the XBox360
and
entering the 8-digital code). Everything worked fine as an Extender
although
the normal Media Connect software wouldn't find the PC (I understand
that
it
should). After installing the security patches on the XP MCE box, the
Xbox
now cannot connect to Media Centre again and it's driving me mad!
Some facts:
* Xbox live will always connect fine to the internet so the wired cat5
from
the Xbox is ok
* Routing is ok as the MCE connection has proved to work in the past
* Nothing showing in the event logs on the MCE PC
* Have disabled Antivirus, Windows Defender and router firewall and
none
of
this makes any difference. Besides, when the connection briefly
worked
previously, all of these were enabled anyway
* Have removed PC connection from Xbox360 (system settings) and setup a
new
connection but this always fails just after entering the 8-digit key on
the
PC as it cannot find the xbox
* Have tried re-registering rsaenh.dll (as noted in another forum to a
similar issue) but this has made no difference
* Cannot find any obvious logs on the PC to examine
Has anyone got any ideas as to why this connection just will not happen
now?
Maybe I could start using Vista (Ultimate Edition) from the RC1 release
but
will the Xbox360 be able to work as a Media Extender to that O/S as I'm
outside the US (in the UK)?
