Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Use the following utility to insure that the NVIDIA Decoder is your
preferred Decoder.

Hello jw,

Nope... I don't have it in the system tray... only the MCE recording
light, Norton Ghost, and the ATI logo... ideas?

An NVIDIA Icon shows up in your system tray when the NVIDIA Decoder is
in use and you click on that Icon.

Hello jw,

Couple of things...

There are no conflicts with the IRQ's... specifically, the video card
& capture card are on different IRQ's (audio not listed because it's
onboard the mother board and i don't see it listed anywhere).

Looks like i'm not using the latest audio driver... Intel released a
new driver in August 2006 (v: 5.10.5143_v1) and I'm running one from
March 2005 (v: 5.10.4449.0). Downloading the new driver now, will
take an image of the box tonight as a backup, and install the driver
to see what happens.

Looks like ATI has newer drivers for my video card as well (Catalyst
v6.8) where I'm using v5.19... downloading those drivers as well.

How do you get to the settings of the nVidia PureVideo Decoder? The
only thing in the Program Group is a unlock/register trial shortcut
to a webpage (I know mine is registered). Couldn't find anything in
the Control Panel or anywhere.

My Mobo Manufacturer recently had new drivers for its onboard
drivers at its Website. Also I believe that drivers are available
separatly for AC97 onboard audio which have been know to resolve
stuttering for other MCE users but I do not remember of the details.

Hello jw,

I don't have a separate audio card, just what's onboard the
motherboard difference?

How would you check the utlization when it stutters? I'm running
this as my primary living room machine and by the time I'd drop out
of MCE & checked in Task Manager, the stutter would be over.

I'll check on the others...

Have you checked for updated MCE drivers for your audio card?
Are you using standard stereo audio? If not have you reviewed your
audio
settings in the NVIDIA DVD Decoder?
What is your CPU utilization when you stutter?

Hello jw,

The problems I'm having sometimes deal with the video getting out
of sync with the audio, but that's rare. Usually the stutter is
with both video and audio and they stay in sync. Usually the
stutter does happen in the same place in the recording, but I
copied one of the recordings to my laptop and it ran just fine
with no stutter.

While I could try another decoder (I'm currently using the NVIDIA
one), I don't think that's the problem (or wouldn't expect it to
be) because I was running fine for a few months until a recent
system update.

I'll double check the IRQ's, but I don't think any are sharing
them because I did have a problem previously that was related to
sharing IRQ's and moved components around until they were all
isolated.

You are experiencing what it commonly called stuttering which
occurs
when
either your DVE Decoder or your graphics card is unable to keep
up
with the
input data rate.
Does your audio also stutter? If yes then try a different DVD
decoder
such
as the 30 day freee trial of the NVIDIA Decoer and make sure
that
you
have
the latest MCE compatible drivers for your audio card.
If you stutter with recorded TV does it always happen at the
same
place in
the recording? Implying that it is problem in the recordin
rather
than
a
problem in the playback?
Is any of your hardware involved in MCE TV sharing its IRQ with
another
component involved in MCE TV?

This is hard thing to explain, so I'll apologize in advance if
it's a bit confusing. There are two different things happening
(and have been happening for a while):

(1) When watching live/recorded TV, on occassion, the stream at
times will suddenly seem to skip multiple frames at a time, and
do this a few times at once. This results in seeing the feed
jumping around. Sometimes I can "fix" it by jumping back with
the reply where I land in the middle of the problem area.

(2) When watching recorded TV, a variation of the above case
happens: the video will go into a fast-foward effect and then
freeze, but the audio will play in normal speed just fine.
Sometimes I can "fix" this by jumping back into the area during
the fast forward.

My MCE box has fairly robust hardware (list here:
http://www.andrewconnell.com/blog/archive/2005/08/25/1957.aspx)
, and I've already tried uninstalling the antivirus solution I
have to make sure there wasn't an IO contention issue. Every
night, I've got a script set to defrag all the drives (OS/apps
drive + data drives) three times each. I also have tried
rebooting the box to see if that helps, no luck on any of the
deals above.

These issues don't happen all the time... I'd say it would
happens a few times a few times a week (IOW: a few times a
week, the above items will happen over and over during an hour
or so of viewing).

Not really sure where I can look to start debugging the problem
in an effort to isolate the issue (audio? video? capture card?
video card?) so any tips on how to get more info to post here
to give more hints would be appreciated.

TIA,
