Please Help with Internet Connection question

I have a Gateway 834GM PC with MCE 2005 and Office Standard 2003. Also
Works 8 that came preinstalled. I just loaded Windows Live Messenger. I
use 56k dial up modem thru local ISP to connect to Internet. After I setup
my Internet Connection I changed dialing properties in Internet Options to
always dial Internet Connection from Dial only if Network Connection is not
present. I loaded all updates, including Rollup 2. I just started Works 8
to look at some templates and check registration info and whatever happened
I checked my dialing properties and it was switched back to dial only if
network connection is not present.

I do have built in Lan card and have reinstalled from Recovery CD's a number
of times, most recently 1 week ago. Everything seems to be working except I
don't understand why this switched back. The only thing I can think of is
the built in Administrator account had the setting still setup to dial only
if network is not present because I logged into it to setup a password.
Maybe it picked up the setting from there? I also setup a new Windows Live
ID after installing Messenger Live. I think I did try to dial manually and
went into the My ISP properties, and instead of clicking on cancel I clicked
on OK--but still don't know why it switched back. My big question is, do I
change it back to always dial or do I leave it setup as dial only if network
connection not present? I am going to setup other users later and hopefully
hookup my other PC to create home network, but I don't know what to do now.
Acrobat Reader also stated that it needed to be updated when I accessed from
Works 8, even though all updates have been loaded. I also have Norton
Internet Security and Norton System Works loaded.

I have fast user switching turned off. I think it might have changed when I
loaded Windows Messenger Live. Does Messenger Live require that I connect
to Internet before I log in or can I setup to autodial and click on Internet
as I have done up until now?

Please reply ASAP. I am afraid to restart or finish loading my programs
before I figure out what to do with this.
