Re: live tv freeze

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

ok, so i disabled bios shadowing, don't know if it was that. i also disabled
video shadowing which shoudn't matter since i use a graphics card.
but i also noticed that my ram was timed according to the core frquency.
since i didn't overclock i thought it wouldn't be a problem but i switched it
to normal/ optimized and no more reboots since. so one of the three did it.
tyr them all and see what works.
cheers

btw, i observed all system activities closely. i was running tv and a monitor
and all system specs running on the monitor. memory, cpu util, sys temps, gpu
temps, voltages, etc. there was nothing what so ever out of the ordinary at
the time it crashes. no memory overrun. no temp problem. no voltage spike or
drop.

memory is at 400-450mb and has a gig installed + virtual memory
voltages are less then 5% below target: 12v@xxxxx, 5v@xxx, 3.3v@xxx
psu has 450w, microatx, dual fan
cpu utilization is below 15% average 8-10%
temps: sys@ 40idle, 45load; cpu 34idle, 39load

i still kind of suspect my cable providers signal, could that be?
could throu off the system if the tv signal is not clean?

ok, i am getting a lil frustrated now. so i installed the update to ru2 and
still no worky. i bought and installed a new psu and no change.

i will try out another mobo. i have a intel d945gtp and p4 3ghz (530) laying
around. it need a pci-e card and i will use a geforce 6600.

see if this works. if not, it's crap. well not yet. i will also try a
digital tv receiver. i just hope any of this does anything. if it does, i
might even put a 930 p4 d in. thinkin about upgrading my p5n32 to a e6600. lol

i found this:

it's an update to rollup 2 which is supposed to address the freeze issues
and others.
i haven't tried it yet but will let you guys know.

ok so i disabled all nv features and even turned of anit alising or so. it
works much better now. crash have become much more infrequent but they happen
every blue moon.
i also uninstalled the nvidia driver 91.31 and replaced it with the 84.25.
any other idea's?

"bot" wrote:

i also noticed that it happens less often if i let mce run in the background,
to record a show or so, with the tv off.
yesterday, it reported that it can't get a tv signal. first time i saw that.
could this be related to my television or my tv signal provider?
i'm with comcast and have an old fashion samsung 27" tv.

"bot" wrote:

ok, so signed up and installed purevideo from nvidia and it worked. the
freeze stoped but now the system crashes every now and then. there is no real
pattern that i could recognize. it doesn't during program switching or so but
it happens sometimes when i watch for a long period of time but there is no
particular time frame. i get the blue screen with the physical memory dump
and a driver error for dv4 or nv4. i think it's the nvidia driver. i upgraded
to the 91.31 nvidia driver since it came of beta. i have a xfx geforce 6200,
as far as i know it was on the compatability list for that driver.

any idea's

MCE does not use any hardware DEcoder from any tv tuner card.

MCE will only use the software MPEG2 decoder, and any hardware assists for
MPEG2 decoding from your video card.

MCE needs an MPEG2 decoder that works through DirectShow. I don't know if
what you got with your tv tuner card works throug DirectShow.. and beyond
that, it probably won't work that well with MCE if it even does work
(remember the MPEG2 decoder is used to playback live tv, recorded tv, and
dvd playback).

You can read more about MPEG2 decoders and MCE here.

ok, so what do you think about the nvidia decoder? i looked at it and it's
only $20.- bucks. i am kind of confident since i run an nvidia vid card as
wll.

my tv tuner card is a
avermedia ultratv 1500 mce
and it has a hardware decoder. i still need a software decoder? or a
software to enable the decoder?

i also checked on the avermedia website and on the driver cd that came
with
the card and the cd has a driver package that is name mpeg decoder, do you
think that would do it? on avermedia's website in the faq's it is also
stated
that i would need a third party mpeg decoder. shouldn't they provide it?
lol,
wouldn't that be the fourth party?
thx thou guy

"SquareWire" wrote:

Hi again,
Jason is right. In fact the question of the MPEG-2 decoder is far more
complex than simple DVD decoding. For example, as i mentioned earlier,
different video decoders on MCE changed the way sound is decoded, even
for
TV. Some of them (like intervideo) would not work well with my soundcard
and
make the TV sound choppy. Others would generate good sound but freeze the
image. Others would just not play after fast-forwarding...
This is probably not adressed by MS because the (problematic) decoders
are
3rd party software.

Good luck!

i will try that. do you think divx would work?

however, i don't seem to grasp how that would solve the problem since
as
far
as i know the tv signal is not transmitted in any mpeg format. i
understand
it would have effect if i play dvd's or watch other media.

i rather think it has something to do with the time shifting option
that
allows to pause and replay live tv.

also why isn't this address by microsoft. it seem it is not an
isolated
incident. and the os has been out for a while. why is their no patch.

Hi bot,
I actually had the same problem once when I was trying to find the
best
DVD
codec with my 5.1 Extigy sound card. Among the various codecs that
exist,
i
found that some would do exactly what you are describing (I don't
remember by
heart which one).
I suggest you use Video Decoder Checkup Utility (free from MS) to
change
the
decoder MCE is using. If you want to try more decoders try getting
Nero
or
DVD players (Intervideo windvd, Powerdvd...)
Hope this helps,

hi, i know this question has been asked before but i couldn't
really
find a
good answer for it. i build my htpc myself. this is not my first
build
but
i'm kind of stuck with this problem.
specs:
cpu: intel p4 3ghz 530 775
mobo: jetway pm800bms
ram: kingston 2x512mb
hdd: maxtor diamondmax 10 320gb sata 150
vid: xfx geforce 6200 tc agp x8 256mb w/84.21 driver
tuner: avermedia ultratv 1500 (w\hw mpeg2)

i freshly installed mce05 and it worked fine. i installed all the
drivers
and update with all ms sp's and patches. even installed sm2 or sw2
or
so.
then i set up the channels and tv guide. everything fine.

then when i started watching tv, after a few minutes the picture
freezes. at
first i thought it might be the temp but it's at 35c, average. the
driver for
the vid card are up-to-date and the decoder is hardware. i have
1gig of
ram
which is not even fully used.
the pc does not reboot. i actully don't even have to shut down
mce. i
just
stop live tv from the remote and start it again. the remote is
microsoft as
well.
anybody any ideas?
highly apprecated
thx
