Re: Delay changing channels

You're welcome.

Actually what seems to happen when you hold the button down (in MCE); is the
guide info bar changes faster than the image. I'd have to look again, as I
normally don't do that, but it might actually miss a station and just show a
brief flash of every other station.

If it's any consolation, my friend who has Time-Warner cable with the DVR is
amazed at how fast my system changes channels compared to his STB, so the
pausing doesn't seem to be unique to MCE. I've also seen other digital cable
systems with the on-screen guide/summary and they black out between stations
also.

Jaime, thanx for the awesome response! Video is extremely
helpful!!!!!!!!!!
In my opinion, the response time w/ MCE is way faster w/ MCE VS. you TV,
however, I would have to agree w/ JW, seems to slow down significantly
when
you hold down the button. Nonetheless, I am NOT holding down the button
jus
flicking at a steady rate as you were and still experience a 1 second
delay.
At this point, i'm thinking the problem must be w/ my Emuzed TV Tuner. I
was
on a Windows MCE live chat earlier today and they said they would "look
into
it". I never got a no can't be done response. If anyone else can guide
me
in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. I still think
there
has to be a registry setting that can be modified.

Definitly makes a difference on MCE when you hold it down. I wonder if
that

Okay, if one picture is worth a thousand words, then here's a few
million.

I used my digicam's video mode last night and shot a few seconds of the
TV
while surfing with MCE and surfing directly on the TV.

I posted the videos here: http://delaneypark.org/surfing.htm.

This is probably not terribly scientific, as I was holding the camera
in
my right-hand and clicking with my left (I am right-handed), but you
get
the general feel. On both, I first kind of tapped the "up" button
quickly
at first, then just held it down later in the clip, you should notice
the
change in speed toward the end of each clip.

You might want to download and watch to make sure they are running
consistently and not stuttering because of connection problems.

Jaime, please clarify this for us! Thanks!

His "Brief" and your "1 second" could actually be about the same
value if
measrued with a stop watch.

ok JW, thanks. If the delay is unavoidable, that is fine, but the
fact
that
Jaime experiences no delay still makes me think that there is
something
that
can be done.

Jaime can you please clarify what you mean by "no delay"? Is it
exactly
like a conventional TV, or do you also see a momentary pause when
going
from
one channel to another???

"JW" wrote:

IMHO due to the establishment of the time shift buffer there is no
way it
will ever match that of a conventional NTSC tuner going direct to
a
screen
without any reprocessing of any kind.

JW, I have confirmed Disk Caching is enable and the HD is using
DMA,
infact,
Ultra DMA mode 2. The delay we are speaking of is a 1 second
delay
when
going from one channel to the next. When you hit the button to
go
up
one
channel or enter any channel #, MCE freezes for 1 second, then
the
next
channel is displayed. On a conventional TV, when u change the
channel,
the
delay is a matter of milliseconds. 1 second may sound
insignificant,
but
try
going from 2 - 99 w/a 1 second delay between each channel. It
gets
to
be
very very annoying. Any other help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

It is not a function of the tuner it is a function of your MCE
software
and
your disk confituration. You might make sure that your Disk
caching
is
enabled for your drive or controller( I forget where the check
box
for
this
is) and that you are using DMA access.
Assuming no prolems there( since the dafaults are the correct
settings)
what
you and others consider long delay vs resonalble response may
be
the
same
time value you could only tell for sure using a stop watch.

So does that mean the Emuzed Tuner is inferior in quality?
Does
anyone
know
of any issues w/ Emuzed Tuners?????

From what has been written, I doubt that much of the delay
is
due
to processing speed.

For *directly* tuned channels (not STB setups), I'd be
willing
to
bet
that it is a function of the tuner's response time, not the
*system*.

I have a Hauppauge 150mce, which is what a lot of people

I

has
come
up
before and most seem to think the second or two delay is
inherent
in
the
system, but the way some have described it, they must be
seeing
much
more
time between chaannels than I. As I said, when I flip
channels,
their
is
only a very brief instant of blank screen. It's not as
fast
as an
old
TV
that didn't have all the filtering and cleanup circuitry
that
TVs
have
now,
but it really is no different delay than if I just have
the
TV
running
directly from the cable.

BTW, I have my signal split with one directly into the
coax
on
the
TV
and
one to the tuner. I have a Sempron 2600, 768M of RAM, a
generic
FX5200
video
card, and I use the nVidia DVD decoder. I don't know how
much
any
of
that
affects the delay in the system.

dfeifer, thanks for the reply but i'm not sure we are
talking
about
the
same
thing. Did you respond to my post by mistake?

Jaime, your post is on point. I don't have a set top
box, I
hava
an
analog
cable, connected DIRECTLY to the tv tuner in my pc. The
fact
that
you
don't
get any type of delay really gives me some hope now! My
cable
signal
is
split between my main TV (different room) and my TV
Tuner.
If i
take
the
cable and connect it directly to the tv tuner (ie. no
splitte),
it
makes
no
difference. What could the problem be???

Oh, what kind of TV Tuner do you have? Mine is an Emuzed
Angel
PCI.
Could
it be a problem w/ this tuner?

"Jaime" wrote:

Out of curiosity, are you using a STB with your setup or
analog
cable
directly plugged in to the tuner card?

We've had this question come up before on the group and
I'm
not
totally
convinced that it is the buffer causing the delay -- I
have
plain
old
analog
cable plugged right into the PC and I have virtually no
delay
when
I
surf.
The channel change at pretty much the same speed as when
I
am
just
watching
the cable directly. I think some of the delay is MCE
getting
the
signal
from
the remote, translating, and resending to the STB.

JW, thanks. That explains the delay, but is there
anyway
to
speed
this
process up? I mean if one is changing channels
constantly,
isn't
there
some
sort of "cached" info like that of IE for example. Not
trying
to
be
difficult, but I want to make this as seamless as
possible.
If
it
can't
be
done, this is something that definitly needs to be
taken
into
consideration
