Re: Delay changing channels

IMHO due to the establishment of the time shift buffer there is no way it
will ever match that of a conventional NTSC tuner going direct to a screen
without any reprocessing of any kind.

JW, I have confirmed Disk Caching is enable and the HD is using DMA,
infact,
Ultra DMA mode 2. The delay we are speaking of is a 1 second delay when
going from one channel to the next. When you hit the button to go up one
channel or enter any channel #, MCE freezes for 1 second, then the next
channel is displayed. On a conventional TV, when u change the channel, the
delay is a matter of milliseconds. 1 second may sound insignificant, but
try
going from 2 - 99 w/a 1 second delay between each channel. It gets to be
very very annoying. Any other help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

It is not a function of the tuner it is a function of your MCE software
and
your disk confituration. You might make sure that your Disk caching is
enabled for your drive or controller( I forget where the check box for
this
is) and that you are using DMA access.
Assuming no prolems there( since the dafaults are the correct settings)
what
you and others consider long delay vs resonalble response may be the same
time value you could only tell for sure using a stop watch.

So does that mean the Emuzed Tuner is inferior in quality? Does anyone
know
of any issues w/ Emuzed Tuners?????

From what has been written, I doubt that much of the delay is due
to processing speed.

For *directly* tuned channels (not STB setups), I'd be willing to bet
that it is a function of the tuner's response time, not the *system*.

Jaime, my system is just as beefy, if not more... 2 gigs ram, intel

delay if
there is not setting that can be adjusted in the registry etc.
Arite
thanx!

I have a Hauppauge 150mce, which is what a lot of people use, and I
don't
know if that affects it or not. As I said, this discussion has come
up
before and most seem to think the second or two delay is inherent in
the
system, but the way some have described it, they must be seeing much
more
time between chaannels than I. As I said, when I flip channels,
their
is
only a very brief instant of blank screen. It's not as fast as an
old
TV
that didn't have all the filtering and cleanup circuitry that TVs
have
now,
but it really is no different delay than if I just have the TV
running
directly from the cable.

BTW, I have my signal split with one directly into the coax on the
TV
and
one to the tuner. I have a Sempron 2600, 768M of RAM, a generic
FX5200
video
card, and I use the nVidia DVD decoder. I don't know how much any of
that
affects the delay in the system.

dfeifer, thanks for the reply but i'm not sure we are talking about
the
same
thing. Did you respond to my post by mistake?

Jaime, your post is on point. I don't have a set top box, I hava
an
analog
cable, connected DIRECTLY to the tv tuner in my pc. The fact that
you
don't
get any type of delay really gives me some hope now! My cable
signal
is
split between my main TV (different room) and my TV Tuner. If i
take
the
cable and connect it directly to the tv tuner (ie. no splitte), it
makes
no
difference. What could the problem be???

Oh, what kind of TV Tuner do you have? Mine is an Emuzed Angel PCI.
Could
it be a problem w/ this tuner?

Out of curiosity, are you using a STB with your setup or analog
cable
directly plugged in to the tuner card?

We've had this question come up before on the group and I'm not
totally
convinced that it is the buffer causing the delay -- I have plain
old
analog
cable plugged right into the PC and I have virtually no delay when
I
surf.
The channel change at pretty much the same speed as when I am just
watching
the cable directly. I think some of the delay is MCE getting the
signal
from
the remote, translating, and resending to the STB.

JW, thanks. That explains the delay, but is there anyway to
speed
this
process up? I mean if one is changing channels constantly, isn't
there
some
sort of "cached" info like that of IE for example. Not trying to
be
difficult, but I want to make this as seamless as possible. If
it
can't
be
done, this is something that definitly needs to be taken into
consideration
for future versions of MCE.....

"JW" wrote:

The delay is caused by MCE creating a new file in order to

the

created
file.

Is there any way to avoid the delay when changing channels w/
MCE?
There
is
a 1 second delay going from one channel to another which gets
to
be
very
annoying when channel surfing. Does anyone have a workaround
for
this
if
this is by design?
