Re: linksys extender problem after VPN installation

At this point the best thing to do is to roll back to a system restore point
from before you installed the VPN software. If that's not an option, the
next thing to do is completely refresh your Windows install (which is
decidedly less fun).

Hi Todd,

I tried both ways (reinstall first, then uninstall and reinstall) and
it didn't work. I still get the same error in the dvcsetup.log

and
then reinstall it, or to try installing the update again without
uninstalling first. Warning: I've never done this before, so I can't
guarantee that it will work. Warning aside, here are the steps for the
latter option:
1) Go to

Hi Todd,

No, I do not have a second PC with Media Center 2005. Can I download
this dll from Microsoft's website?

I understand that there is no guarantee this will work. But I do think
it will be worth a try. My only other option is to start with a fresh
install of Windows, which is alot of work. I have been running Media
Center since October of last year, and I've already had to reinstall
Windows because another piece of software stepped on Media Center,so I
would like to avoid reinstalling Windows if possible.

I love Media Center and the Media Center extender, but I am beginning
to think that Media Center needs to live on a PC that is locked in a
closet and not used by anyone for anything else (but recording and
serving up content to the extender). Its the "boy in the bubble".

Thanks for your help,
Gloria

Hi Todd,

Please see my responses to your questions below. Again, thanks for
your help. You are definitely onto the problem here, because the
McrdDeviceTablesvr.dll does not exist on my PC anymore. It must
have
existed before the VPN-1 installation, because this PC has been
hosting
the Media Center Extender since last year!

Thanks,
Gloria

No errors in Application, System, and Security Event logs at the

I searched the entire c: drive and McrdDeviceTableSvr.dll does not

Skipped this step since the .dll doesn't exist

Hi Todd,

Sorry if I am not being clear about the series of events.

I redid the same steps just to make sure that the machine
reboot
did
not turn off the MCRD service (even though it is set to
automatic
start
in the services menu).

1. I typed net start mcrdsvc at DOS command prompt. The
message
was
----> 'The Media Center Extender Service service was started
successfully

2. Ran the LinkSys Extender Setup software on the MCE PC.

3. Setup aborted with vague error message 'The setup for the
Media
Center Extender was not sucessful.....'

There was no machine reboot involved this time in this series
of
steps
that I described above. It looks like the setup script shuts
down
the
MCRD service (which I started manually), and then fails (com
object is
either not valid or not registered) when it tries to restart
it.

Obviously, MCRD service exists and must be valid if I was able
to
start
it sucessfully by running it manually from the DOS command
prompt.

What does 'not registered' mean in the context of this error
message?
Is the CLSID of the com object not the MCRD service that the
script is
looking for?

The full text of the dvcsetup.log follows.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Todd,

Thanks for your quick response!

I ran the net start command and the service started
successfully.
I
reran the MCE setup and after it asked for a machine
reboot,
the
setup
aborted again - but the dvccon log is slightly different.
Instead of
saying it cannot start the MCRD service, it says it cannot
enable
MCRD.
Is it possible that I have re-register the DLL?

Hello,

I have been using MCE 2005 and a LinkSys Media Center
Extender
for
about 9 months. I recently installed Checkpoint VPN-1
SecureRemote
client software on my MCE PC and my Media Center
Extender
will
not
connect. I know that VPN-1 has a firewall built into
it,
and
it
is
probably automatically disconnecting the remote desktop
user
for
the
Media Center extender. I've disabled VPN-1 at startup
and
I've
set
Fast User Switching to automatic in Windows Services.
I
set
MCRD
service to automatic as well.

Any help is appreicated!
