Re: Wireless Network problems

Update - I appear to have resolved the problem in the simplest way. I went to
windows update, and discovered that there were two "optional" updates
available - one, which had been available since 11 July, was an Intel driver
update for Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network conection. Since installing
that, all seems to be OK (touch wood!!!)

I have had exactly the same experience with my Toshiba laptop (L10), and it
is definitely related to Vista rather than the hardware. My wife and I both
have laptops (hers is a Compax nx9040, which I'm using now, because of the
connectivity problem), and both worked perfectly on the wireless network
(from a Belkin Router) using Windows XP (SP2). I have only installed Vista on
my Toshiba, and it is behaving exactly the same as Kimberly's HP. There is
definitely no problem with the router or the signal strength, as the Compaq
continues to connect fine. The Toshiba will drop in and out at will, and the
indicator of connectivity is frequently wrong as to its status. It is more
reliable close to the router, so it seems as if the signal strength is being
significantly reduced for some reason.

It is unbelievably frustrating, as, apart from that, I find Vista to be
pretty stable and good to use.

Any advice would be much appreciated - Jeremy

Well, logically, it could be the router, the wireless adapter on the
computer, or signal problems. If you're in the same room as the router, I
think we can eliminate signal problems. That leaves the wireless adapter or
the router. Since it's a laptop, you should be able to take it somewhere
with a wireless signal and verify that the laptop's wireless receiver works
(i.e., Starbux or something). That leaves just the router. Make sure the
antenna is firmly attached to it. Other than that, I'd guess it needs to be
replaced.

While I won't say anything bad about LinkSys, I will say I've never had good
luck with them (had several routers and access points). Never had good luck
with their network switches either. I _have_ had good luck with DLink,
Belkin, and the now sadly defunct Microsoft wireless products. If you check
the ads in your Sunday paper, you can probably find one on sale for $20 or
so. In the meantime, can you just run a cable from your router to your
laptop? That'd get you up and running for the moment...

Dana, thanks for the response, here are some awnsers
Been to HP - NO HELP!!! no new drivers
This is a house and I sit 12 inches from the wireless router
Yes same room - same desk :-)
It was last powered down and up a few days ago while troubleshooting this
problem
Lynxis brand router -

This is so frustrating ~ since everything worked fine before doing the
windows reinstall and update...

You might visit HP to see if they have newer drivers for the wireless.
The
other question I have is about the setting - is this a house and the
wireless signal passes thru walls/floors? Or is this happening in the
same
room as the wireless router? How old is the router, and how long has it
been
since it was last powered down then up? What brand of router?

Ok I have an HP laptop that I just did a complete reformat of the hard
drive
and reinstalled XP (via HP restore disks). I did all of the security
updates
and then installed my Office. everything was working great (or so I
thought)

Now my wireless network is on some kind of drug!!! It goes on and off
at
will and sometime will even tell me it is "not connected" but it really
is
connected... We had this problem on another computer with a USB
wireless
card and the solution was to turn off the "let windows manage my
wireless
networks" so I thought "HEY, this will work on my laptop!!" Wrong!!!
well
ok it work for a few hours, but now I am right back to where I was,
with
my
network wireless dropping when even it wants and sometime coming back
but
most of the time I have to reboot.

I was NOT having this problem until I did the reformat and reinstall -
so
my
only conculsion is that it must be something in one of the new updates
to
windows. At this point I only have windows, MS Office, Zone Alarm and
Norton
installed (all of which were installed before and it ran fine)

Anyone else having this problem OR anyone have any suggestions????
