Re: MCE Live TV Lockup with Hauppauge 150 and nVidia GeForce2 MX

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Since with an extender all of the video decoding and graphics card activity
is done in the extender there is actually less of a requirement for memory
or CPU power on the host MCE system.

I wasn't able to find the system requirements for MCE with an extender. My
computer fits the basic level of system requirements for MCE but it has a
little more RAM. For using an extender is there a higher requiements on
RAM
or Processor speed?

Also, I am not going to be doing HTDV.

Thanks,

Adam

FWIW, your system specs are technically below what is needed for use of
Extender technology, but if you find that it works ok, then that's up to
you.

Just to clarify, I can do all configuration for the recording of live
TV
from
the Xbox 360? If that is the case then I will just use the Xbox
instead
and
not bother with a new video card.

Thanks,

Adam

You don't need Live TV to work the MCE machine, for the XBox 360 to be
able to access it. As long as you don't want to use the MCE PC
itself,
you should be ok.

I am using MCE 2005.

The thing is that I am only going to be using an Xbox 360 as an
extender so
I don't need this system to be able to play video in any decent way.
I
don't
really want to invest in a new video card if I don't have to.

Is there a way to make MCE 2005 work with the GeForce2 card just so
that I
can get it recording?

Thanks for your quick reply,

Adam

If you are trying to use mce2005 with that system, you need a beter
video
card, as the Geforce2 MX cannot do VMR9 rendering (as it is not a
directX 9
capable card).

You'd need a Geforce FX5200 or higher.

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 with an nVidia GeForce2 MX video card
and a
Hauppauge 150 PAL MCE TV card(I am in New Zealand). The machine
has
640megs
of RAM and a 1.6ghz processor.

I did a fresh install of Windows MCE and then updated all
security
patches
and non-vital updates.

I then installed the current version of PureVideo from the web.
Then I
installed the current MCE drivers for the TV card. Then I
updated
my
video
drivers to the current MCE compatible drivers off of the nVidia
web
site.

At this point when I go into Media Center and do all the setup
and
then
click on "Live TV" it hangs. It will first start to display the
"Working"
moving circle for about 5 seconds and then the working circle
will
freeze
and
then it is hung. When I go to the task manager I find that a
process is
using 100% of the CPU. I don't remember which one it is and I
don't
have
the
machine with me right now but it is either ehHome.exe or
ehShell.exe.

I installed DecCheck and checked to make sure the PureVideo
decoder
was
the
current one and it is. We also tried the WinDVD decoder and one
open
source
one and they all exhibit the same problem.

I also reinstalled windows to see if it was a bad install but it
happened
the same after reinstallation.

The radio player seems to work correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Adam
