I am about to build a new MCPC using Media Centre 2005 OS. I have
identified the following components to buy:

Case
Motherboard

Get a motherboard with a Firewire 1394 port as well as at least 6 USB
ports...

CPU & cooler
Video card

These also have to be Media Center compatible. That would include nVidia
5200 or better, or ATI 9550 or better.

Power supply
Sound card

Your motherboard might have sound good enough for your ears...

Wireless network adaptor
USB ports

The ports would be on the motherboard, generally...

Memory card reader
DVD-RW drive

Get a dual layer -+ RW. The LightScribe ones can then burn the label on the
other side of the disc when you're done...

RAM (512Mb)

Absolute minimum, and you'd be happier with a gig or 2.

Keyboard (wireless)
Mouse (wireless)
Remote control

Make sure it's a proper Media Center remote...

Speakers
TV tuner (digital)

Since you're in Scotland, you'll want to make sure you get one that can
receive your particular signal. Those in the US are generally NTSC, not PAL.

Am I missing anything? Cheers.

You're missing all the specifics...AMD or Intel? Single or dual core CPU?
32-bit or 64?

I'd also suggest at least a surge protector, but better an uninterruptible
power supply (battery backup). Will your case be a tower or more of a stereo
unit's form factor? What kind of cooling would you be using? Do you want a
display card with a fan? What kind of output are you using - DVI to TV,
sVideo, composite, HDMI? What kind of TV or monitor will you be using?

Take a look at www.MediaCenterStuff.com - it is dedicated to the
build-it-yourself person...
