The THEY down there in Florida are saying that if anyone plans to use an
Antenna to receive TV after February 2009 then they must have a Digital STB
since no anlaog transmissions will be allowed anymore from a transmitter in
the US.
Since cable companies are not using public airspace to transmit theiir
analog channels they are not subject to this rule. They would be shooting
themselves in the foot if they did not allow their existing cable customers
to still recieve their analog channels just like they do today because that
would force them away from cable.
In addition to TW in NYC my local Cox Cable company has started testing dual
broadcasting of analog channels over digital. Cox digital channel 802 was
the same as analog 2 and Cox digital 807 was the same as anlaog 7 during the
tests which AFAIK is the way they plan to implement service for those with
only digital tuners without eliminating their current analog cable
customers.

That would be nice, but what they keep mentioning down here in FL is that
everyone will have to have a digital box or digital TV by 19xx (they keep
changing their mind. Might just be a marketing ploy to get everyone on
digital.

AFAIK just becasue TW will make all channels availale via digital does
not mean that they will drop the Analog service of them also since there
is no FCC requirement for them to that. I believe TW in New York City
now offers all of their analog channels also in digital with different
channel numbers of course.

I have analog cable, no STB and I love it. Right now, I just split the
coax and have one into the MCE box and one directly into the TV. No IR
blaster hassles, no delay when surfing channels.
I dread the day (that T/W keeps threatening) when everyone in our system
has to change to digital and I have to put an ugly box on my TV!

Thank you for the answer, but that stinks.
I am a big MS fan, but how they did not see this coming is beyond me.
Especially since there have been QAM cards out there for some time.
Who on earth does not have digital cable/uses and OTA antenna??

MS has announced and confirmed that the you will be able to purchase a
Vista
system with cable card support from several of the OEMs. I believe
that
there are 2 HDTV cards available today that have QAM support( one is
the
Fusion 5) which allow you watch the unencrypted digital channels from
your
cable company which are nomally the same channels as your local OTA
digital
stations which you can also get with a HDTV card. However, the QAM
support
is not available in MCE you have to use it in normal XP.

What is the deal with QAM and digital cable tuner cards? I built a
MCE
about
a year ago, and since decommisioned it from my giant HDTV since it
does
not
decode digital cable. I replaced it with Time Warner dual-tuner
DVR/HD
box
and my life has never been better.
A year later I am reading that MCE *STILL* does not support digital
cable,
and cannot even get a straight answer on whether Vista will.
I want VERY BADLY to use an MCE as my main hub of the home theatre,
but
this
lack of digital cable support is a show stopper.
Any solutions out there???
Thanks.
