Re: Opt out of Password Requirement

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

.net Framework 2.0 does NOT replace 1.1 (they run side-by-side so that
programs written for one platform will continue to work after newer ones are
installed).

MCE2005 uses .net Framework 1.1, so you definitely need 1.1 installed.
Whether or not you need .net Framework 2.0 will depend on whether you have
programs that need it. If you have programs that need it, then it's sorta a
no-brainer. If you don't, then it's up to you.

Jason, no reason to write back - figured it out, finally! Misread one
piece
of your answer and didn't enter my own username (duh!). When I wrote,
"the
chance you take . . .", nothing negative was meant - it was simply
sometimes
things happen that set you back a step or two. That was the case.

One last opinion from you - Microsoft.NET 2.0 or 1.1 - any preference -
what's the difference?

Thanks again,
Jim

Jason,
Guess this is the chance you take when seeking advice, however if doing
what
you proposed, ALL my settings and desktop configuration are gone. In
reversing the actions under "control userpasswords2", I now need a PW,
but
still have lost all the former configurations. What happened?

Goto Start, Run and type "control userpasswords2"
Then under the users tab, uncheck Users must enter a username/pass to
use
this computer"
Then press ok and Enter your username/password

Or

Alternatively, you can use TweakUI for Windows XP to do this.

I'm running WinXP SP2 and I believe Microsoft.NET 2.0 (could be
1.1).
After
turning on the computer, a password is required to continue. Don't
ever
remember having this before - is there a way to opt out of this
screen so
the
computer continues to boot? I'm the sole user of this computer.

Thanks,
Jim
