Re: Media Center for those who wish to use their existing remote.

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Media Center will not be able to use the RF remote that comes with the TV
wonder Elite (it'll work to a point, however, it won't drive your Set top
box functions as one example).

You need an IR capable remote such as the Microsoft Remote Control and
Receiver for Media Center PCs
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=065

If you don't use a set top box, then you can watch tv. Otherwise, if your
tv source requires a set top box, you need the abovementioned hardware so
that Media Center can control your set top box.

I did some research on capatible TV tuners at microsoft. Bought a ATI TV
Wonder Elite Remote Control Edition. This card was on the list at
microsoft.
Installs fine. Run setup in Media Center for TV. Everything fine till the
part about an IF control. Software wont let you save setup without an IF
control, so therefore you can't watch TV in Media Center

Well, I think you came to the wrong conclusion. You only need to buy a
*compatible* tuner card for MCE and it will work swimmingly.

I would hazard a guess that the majority of people on this board did not
buy
a prebuilt Media Center PC with a tuner installed, most purchased the
software and components separately, then built their own systems.

I to bought a Media Center. Nice machine until I tried adding a tuner
card.
Also not having "IR Control Cable" windows will not let you save
settings
to
be able to watch TV thru Media Center. Have come to the conclusion that
if
you don't buy Media Center machine with a TV tuner pre installed. The
software is worthless!

One thing us humans appreciate when utilizing new home entertainment
equipment is, not having another remote around. I am not slamming the
MCE
remote at all, but some consumers want to let their cable box do it's
job,
and not windows. The truth is, when Media Center gives me a hard time
about
not having an "IR Control Cable" and not continuing along with the
setup
because of that would make some people think your software is "booty".
Although I dont believe the software is "booty" others would be
waaaaay
more
opinionated. I do not mind having the tv tuner set to channel 3 and
letting
my cable box do it's job. Hope my post makes to all who read it. My
real
reason, I want to see how running a game console through Media Center
pan
out
performance wise. Cant get into setting up the S-Video until after the
TV
is
satisfied.
