1) Without an MCE compatible remote, you would be limited to mouse or keyboard navigation inside the MCE interface.
2) If you purchase any of the tuner cards with a remote, they may or may not have the MCE drivers and their remote does not control the Media Center experience. It controls their tuner card, directly. This is NOT compatible with Media Center.
3) Formats: 4x3 is standard TV and is what will be recorded with the Hauppauge 150, 500 cards, the ATI 550 and other cards. 16x9 is HDTV and requires an HDTV tuner, such as the ATI HDTV Wonder card. There are others. HDTV is only available "over the air", not via cable or satellite, in MCE 2005. Additionally, MCE 2005 requires a dedicated analog (4x3) tuner to be installed in order to install an HDTV tuner. This restriction will be removed in Vista.

Hi Buckeyeboy,.
Thanks for the reply and for listing the diffferent TV tuners that come and
don't come with the remote that functions with MCE 2005.
1) Just what would be the drawback in not having the MCE remote or how would
it function (what does it control if it is not controlling MCE)? Is the MCE
remote IR based and that's what makes it different/betterthan he remote
Hauppauge supplies for example?
2) So what you are saying and Doug previously confirmed is that the
Hauppauge, although their tuner might say it is MCE, that only refers to the
tv card/drivers, not the remote. So what does that remote control? Does it
have to be used with their supplied software which is the WINTV2000
application? It would be silly to have both MCE and WINTV2000 guides loaded
or working simultaneously I would imagine - am I understanding this correctly?
3) You said: "It comes down to budget, available slots, and what type of TV
you are
interested in recording: 4:3 or 16:9 with your Media Center PC." I lost you
here, I understand these are two different formats, but does the tv tuner
affect or determine the 4:3 or 16:9 format? Please explain in light of the
fact that I would have to have an NTSC tuner installed in the first place
regardless in MCE 2005 (I have a feeling that XP Professional would not have
had this limitation an I correct)?
You said: "If you are staying with Media Center 2005 RU2, then you must have
an analog tuner first, then you can focus on an HDTV tuner next." Yes, I
believe that is a current limitation with MCE 2005, if you want to add an
HDTV tuner, you must have an NTSC analog one installed first and recognized
prior to adding the HDTV tuner and hybrid tuners that are advertised like the
HDTV Wonder from ATI will not suffice either, even though it has both NTSC
and NTSC tuners combined. I believe VISTA will remove that restriction, but
thanks for pointing that out.
Thanks,
Roger

Many tuner cards come with a remote for the specific software bundled with
the tuner card.
Hauppauge = some with remote for WinTV2000 (PVR250)
Hauppauge = some with MCE remote (PVR - 500MCE)
AverMedia = no remotes (I think)
nVidia dual tuner - MCE remote
ATi Theater 550 - MCE remote
I think many of the sites are saying thier TV tuner 'hardware' is Media
Center capable, but not necesarily the remote. For example, I have a few old
Hauppauge PVR-250's that came with remotes. The cards are Media Center
compatible, but the remotes are not. The remotes support the WINTV2000
application.
Keep in mind that not all tuner cards are compatible with Media Center 2005.
That is why you have so many choices and bundles available to you. If your
Dell Media Center PC did not ship with a remote, then you are going to want
to look into getting a a tuner with Media Center Remote or buying the remote
seperately.
It comes down to budget, available slots, and what type of TV you are
interested in recording: 4:3 or 16:9 with your Media Center PC.
If you are staying with Media Center 2005 RU2, then you must have an analog
tuner first, then you can focus on an HDTV tuner next. You cannot jump right
into HDTV only.
Keep in mind that if you have 1 or 2 analog tuners, then must have the same
source: cable box, satillite, digital cable. You can not mix and match tv
inputs as Media Center can only keep track of 1 guide type.
Good luck!

The only real difference is the drivers that the card ships with. The Hauppauge 150-PVR is the exact same card as the 150-PVR-MCE. The driver disk that ships with it is different, and the MCE version does not come with the Hauppauge remote control (which is not an MCE 2005 remote). Additionally, if you're looking at a bundle that includes the Media Center remote control, it will have the Media Center drivers.

I am looking into getting a tuner for my new Dell with MCE 2005. In looking
at tuners from different manufacturers, I notice that some come with a remote
and some don't. Both types state they are Media Center compatible.
Of the ones that come with a remote some also state they have their own TV
guide software, yet MCE has its own also. I get the impression that their
remote and software are a unit, which would render MCE's TV guide and remote
functions basically non-functional. Am I understanding this correctly? Help
me understand.
If so, what type of tuner/remote combination is necessary or I should be
watchintg out for that will allow MCE 2005 to function with the TV tuner, its
TV guide and remote controling the MCE functions?
Or would any remote work on MCE 2005 with a tuner when both are of the same
manufacturer. If someone can elaborate on these points I would greatly
appreciate it.
Thanks,
Roger
