Re: Accessing the Network

I'm confused. Is this a workgroup or a domain.

If it is a workgroup, then it is likely just a permissions problem. Make
sure your new machine has a password, as that is required for file sharing.
For now, turn off the Windows firewall and see if that helps. Turn off any
other firewall that is installed too. Make sure they'rein the same
workgroup too.

Let us know the results and we'll help you figure it out.

hi, just purchaases an HP desktop with XP MCE2005 preinstalled. Have been
unable to set up network on the deskstop. I get the message " {network
name}
not accesssible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource.
Contact admin. to find out if you have access permission". I have been
unable to get passed this problem. I had a pre-exisiting network on my old
desktop with no problems. My laptop sees the desktop but is unable to
acess
printer or files. I was told by an HP tech support person the XP MCE is
not
able to be networked. I was also told by another HP person that they would
be
able to help me, but only, thru paid network support. Since this is a
brand
new computer , i felt that was an unacceptable option. It seems the only
alternative is to return it.

Domains can be a problem but there are reg hacks for that, or when you
first
install MCE 2005 you get the option to jount a domain .
For workgroups there is on problem I have MCE 2005 and XP networked and
it
works fine.
Just give the workgroup the same name it works.

Is it true - as it seems to be - that Networking to ADS or workgroup or
other
domains does not work in MCE's of XP? There also seems to be no Windows
Firewall and WMI does not exist in the install files. If there's a
workaround, let me know or . . . if that's just the way it is I will
plan
accordingly although it is a bummer since my computers are all
networked . .
. .except this one. Thanks for help.
