Question on USB scanner--older model

I have a 6 year old HP Scanjet 5400c scanner. I still works great with MCE
2005 with one exception: I can't use the scanner buttons to scan if I put
my PC into standby. I can still scan by manually starting the scanning
program, just not the buttons.

If I unplug the scanner until I am ready to use it so I can put the PC into
standby, will it likely cause problems with my programs setup to use the
scanner? I just don't want it to try to reinstall the drivers or anything.
