Yes, if using a STB, you would need two boxes if you want to receive two
different signals.
If you are using analog, direct cable (right from the wall to the TV), you
then just plug into the dual card and can record two different shows (or
watch one and record one). If you have two separate tuner cards, you would
still can record two separate shows with analog, but you would need a
splitter for the coax to send the signal to the two separate cards. With
analog, you also could do a three-way split and feed one directly to the TV,
then you could record two different shows and be watching a third (although
you would have any DVR function).

So how does nVidia NVTV or other onboard dual tuner works compared to
having
2 separate tuner ? For those also you need 2 settop box ?

Your STB can only output one channel at a time, so a second tuner card
won't
do anything. You will need to have a second STB to receive two channels
at
the same time. You could put in a HD tuner card and recieve over the air
HD,
if that is available in your area.

I've Gateway GT 5056 with Athlon X2 3800+ connected to my Sony 30" HDTV
using
ATI x800 XL AIW card (which has built-in tv-tuner/pvr). Everything
works
fine
with single tuner installed on my machine. I've Time warner ditial
cable
box
which also brings in HD channels.
My current setup is...
1) cable comes from wall outlet into cablebox.
2) HD content is feed directly from cable into Sony HDTV using
component
out
from cable box.
3) ATI x800 XL video card is feed with S-Video coming from cable box.
4) Media center remote and IR receiver is connected directly to
computer.
I'm able to change channels using media center remote on cable box bcoz
of
IR
blaster connection from IR receiver to cable box using IR blaster.
5) My problem begins when I installed one more tv -tuner POWERCOLOR
T55E-P03
PCI-Express x1 Interface TV tuner card into my system.
Media center is able to recognize that I've 2 tuner in my card.
When I run thru TV signal setup. The problem occurs at the time when I
reach
remote setup part for second tuner. With first tuner setup everything
worked
fine.
I've only one media center remote and I've one IR receiver which talks
to
only one cable box.
I've additional IR blaster cable which I can connect to second IR
blaster
hole on IR receiver if needed.
When I run setup and reach the point where MCE tries to configure
remote
for
second tuner it assumes that I've 2 settop box instead of only one. And
due
to this when I use remote of my settop box it is not recongnizing it
(as
this
is same remote which was configured when I ran setup for previous
tuner,
so
it thinks this as invalid remote for second tuner.).
Is there a way to make MCE work with same settop box for 2 different
tuners ?
