RE: XP and Defender behaviour (sorry for length)

It looks like what I did has cured the problem - so thank you for your help
to resolve this. And I didn't have to boot into safe mode either hahaha.

sounds good, please let us know how it all went! :-)

OK thanks. I have removed the "old" version, rebooted and installed the
latest version with the latest engine and definitions and rebooted again.
Give me a day or so to see how it goes. So far on the final reboot after
doing this installation it went well. I have always had the updates to be
automatic and I thought that included the actual Version. In fact I am not
really sure my old version was different to the newer one as looking at the
webpage the complete version number is not shown.

Sure,
I cannot remember but from my experience (it has actually been a very long
time since I have had to boot into Safe Mode) the settings were restored the
same way.

Just to be sure, it would be better for you to use the file and settings
transfer wizard to backup your settings just in case, then restore them if
anything goes wrong.

For now, let's forget Safe mode and carry on with the other requests and see
where this leads us.

Thanks Ahmed but before doing the Safe Mode could you please put me at ease.
When I had win98 I had to boot into safe mode to sort something out. When I
booted again into Normal Mode I found all my appearance settings were altered
back to default. Now I have XP and have made extensive alterations to the
appearance, I want to be sure they they will stay that way through booting
into safe made.

Hi Harris.

Have you:

1) updated Windows Defender?
2) booted into Safe mode and seeing whether this problem still happens?
3) removed, rebooted, then re-installed Windows Defender?
4) checked the event logs for any errors/warnings about Windows Defender, or
perhaps other issues that may have been logged? if so - post them here

Hope to find a cure for this problem for you.

Best wishes,

When I switch on the computer the system boots normally until it has fully
booted. Then I manually start up some programs that I do not want to be
started with the boot. Most times at this point the computer semi-freezes,
meaning I can click on shortcuts but NOTHING happens . However if I wait
long enough (maybe ten minutes- it varies) eventually Defender will say in a
bubble that it is starting the file MPCMDRUN.EXE. Once that happens then
suddenly the computer UNfreezes and runs all the programs I just clicked
manually. Having this semi-freeze is very annoying but I found out that if
I hold the OFF switch and force a shut down ( I can't restart in the normal
manner as the computer is frozen) and then start again that on the second
attempt there is NO freezing.
What can I do about this behaviour which I attribute to Defender? I do not
really like forcing a shut down nor have the constant feeling of whether the
computer will or will not boot?
