His explanation certainly does not make sense you also stated before that
the problem also occurs when you are using only the laptop screen.

Hello all, thanks for everyone's input and ouptut in this matter. Just
wanted
to update those who have an interest in this matter. I called Dell on
Monday,
told them about the problem and said I wished to return the system. The
customer care employee practically insisted that I speak to a technician
before she would accept the return, and since this was my 2nd identical
system from Dell, I grudgingly accepted. I spent close to an hour with a
tech
who made me try this and that resolution, unplug this and that wire. When
he
finally gave up, his conclusion was: it seems that the computer cannot
output
correctly to the tv because it is not a monitor. On the fly I accepted his
response and made arrangements to return the 2 laptops to Dell. But after
I
hung up with the tech, I realized that his conclusion did not make any
sense
to me: the tv's resolution is only 640 x 480 where as the notebook's
monitor
went to 800 x 600 for live tv. Unless I did not understand what he meant,
I
think those guys over at Dell are peddling underpowered and overhyped
laptops. As I noted in an earlier post, one tech admitted to me during
troubleshooting of my 1st system, that my "configuration" should not have
been sold as is, and he then proceeded to try and sell me a much more
expensive laptop. I am a computer tech, I fix pc's for a living, but I
don't
understand why such a powerful computer (1 gig ddr ram, sata hard drive,
dual
core processor, 256 mb integrated video card) cannot act as a pvr. I have
done a bit of reading over on Dell's website, using 'choppy video' as
keywords, and there are lots of customers over there with different
systems
that have similar problems. Weird. Take care. Charles.

I'm not surprised. It won't install on mine either.

I assume that your system has the Intel 915 graphics chip and I am
surprised
that you could not update the driver using the driver from the Intel
Website.
If you are using an NTSC tuner I assume that you have 64MB or more of
main
memory allocated to the 915 chip. If you are using an ATSC tuner I
assume
that you have 128MB of main memory allocated.

Do you have RU2 and the updated to RU2 installed?

No. Just choppy video. As well, I have read from other readers here
that
video played correctly using windows media player. I have tried it,
and
it
works fine with that program. However, I want it to work right using
media
center.

Do you also get choppy audio?

I went to the Intel website, downloaded the appropriate video driver
for my
integrated video card. Tried to install, and it told it would not
work
for
my
card, even though it was the same model.

Don't use the driver updates from WinUpdate they are often many
months
behnd
and are ofgen the wrong ones. Only use driver updates from the
manufacturers
of the cards/chipsets Websites even the Dell updates are sometimes
the
wrong
ones.
Get the correct updates and see if that helps.

Hello JW: the output resolution is 800x600, the lowest allowed
resolution.
I
reduced it from 32 bit to 16 bit colour and no difference. Since
my
1st
post
late last night (earlier today actually, I have updated all
drivers
from
Dell
website and updates from windows. No change. Unbelievable.
Charles.

If you lower the output resolution does the choppiness go away?
Do you have more than one display attached? If yes try just
using
one
display.

I feel for you, because I have the same problem. I am now
troubleshooting
my
2nd brand new Dell Inspiron 6400. You read that right: I bought
my
1st
about
one month ago, and full screen video worked only for the 2 first
days.
On
the
phone with Dell techs for hours over several days was a complete
waste
of
time. They finally gave up and told me I needed a more powerful
video
card
than the integrated 256 mb one that came with the machine. One
customer
care
person told me that my particular configuration would not work
and
tried
to
sell me a more powerfull machine with MCE. I currently have a
dual
core
machine, 1GB RAM and a 100 GB SATA drive. Shouldn't that be
sufficient?
Finally Dell agreed to send me a 2nd identical machine: this one
works
in
full screen but with unbearably choppy video. Ever try to watch
a
hockey
game
or any other sporting event like that? I have just about had it
and
am
darn
close to sending both machines back to Dell. If you have found a
solution
I
would love to hear about it. I did find a few suggestions from
the
microsoft
knowledgebase that I am going to try re cleaning out temp and
dump
files
and
increasing my swap file, but I am not holding my breath. Here's
the

that article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896474/en-us

Alright, now it's back. This is very strange...I also tried
