Re: xbox (old) media center not connecting to mce 2005

I can't figure out how to set these parameters on the onecare firewall short
of actually shutting it off. Therefore I have actually de-installed onecare
now and made these settings on the windows firewall.

Its working great now. I'll have to get some help on configuring the onecare
firewall...

Good to hear you're up and running.

No need for event logs now that we know what's going on. Can you confirm
that your firewall is configured to allow the ports/applications specified
at the below link?

THATS IT! Its the bleeding FIREWALL.

Switched it off and everything started working! IOts still taking a little
longer to connect than what I remember but its working.

Of course, I still don't why... I did check the ports before. And the
config
has been left at the default settings before and after the re-install.

Do I still need to dump the event logs here? I think there were a few that
looked a little wierd...

Those events appear normal; is there anything under the System or
Application logs?

Also, could you temporarily turn your firewall off to confirm that it's
not
causing your connectivity issues? (note: if you do this, I recommend
turning
off your cable/DSL modem until you re-enable your firewall).

Regarding your Windows Media Connect question - if you don't have any
Windows Media Connect devices on your network, there's no need to have
this
software installed, so you may as well uninstall it.

Hallelujah!

Found the error logs - they were under "Windows OneCare" not
"Security".
There were two events around that time. I am attaching both:

Your current config should work fine. A couple additional
questions:
- Check the Application, System, and Security Event Viewer logs
(right
click
My Computer --> Manage); are there any errors corresponding to the
time
that
you tried to connect? If so, please post them here.
- Are there any Xbox-branded Ethernet to wireless bridges present on
your
home network?

Todd

Thanks for that - this updated my media center extender software
from
version 5.something to version 6.something. However, the problem
still
persists

Could it be that I need to update the Xbox side software? My
version
there
is 0.0.1. Not sure if that would help be cause prior to the clean
install
of
windows, everything was working fine and the after the re-install,
the
software versions were the same.

Having said that, did update rollup 2 make the version 0.0.1 xbox
side
software obsolete? I think the rollup happened over the weeked
that I
was
upgrading and so that is the only potential difference between my
pre-
and
post- configuration.

Thanks for your time - Todd and Reginald.

As Reginald suggests, please install the latest PC-side Extender
software
and see if that resolves your issue.

I have an xbox with media center extender software which was
connecting over a wired network to my MCE 2005 PC. This was
working
fine till about a week ago when I decided to upgrade the HDD
as
I
was
running out of disk space.

After doing a clean re-installl of MCE I tried re-installing
the
extender program. It ran through the entire setup
succesfully.
The
xbox showed "connecting" on the startup screen and then went
blank.
Everytime I restart the the xbox, it does the same thing -
shows
connecting (for a long time) and then goes blank. It used to
take
about 15 sceonds for the Media Center menu before this thing
died on
me.

There hasn't been a big change in the PC configuration. I
didn't
know
what the MS software versions were before the upgrade but as
I
have
automatic upgrades turned on, I imagine there would be no
difference
before and after. I have upgraded the display driver on the
radeon
9200 PRO to catalyst. I didn't think that would affect the
connectivity to the xbox, though.

Also, the media center extender manager shows the xbox
extender
but
the stattus is always "Disconnected".

Any ideas what's going on here? My wife's going to leave me
if I
don't fix this.

LOL! You know, I think mine might too...

I presume you're using the Media Connect software that came
with
the
XBox
extender to install on your PC? Maybe you should try the
software
that
works with the 360... it's newer, and it might have been
upgraded
automagically on your old setup.

Let's see... where was that...

pretty sure it's the Media Connect 2.0 software on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/devices/wmconnect/default.aspx

See if that doesn't do the trick.

Good luck!
