Re: XP MCE and XBOX 360 Protected Content Issues

It would be interesting to see if removing that account from the
Administrators group put you back into a broken state.

Interesting; making the account an admin shouldn't be necessary (and
shouldn't make any difference for that matter), but as long as it works
for
you I'd say it's a reasonable workaround.

Either way, this is helpful data to have. I'll have to go think about it
a
bit more to see if it makes any sense though :-)

Todd,

Prior to doing the reinstall of MCE I tried one more thing that I had
come
across as a possible solution. In MCE I found the MCX1 user account and
added it to the Administrator group on the local MCE system. Suddenly
all
protected content on the MCE is playable on the MCX.. I am not sure if
this
is a real solution, or some sort of band-aid hack that masks an
underlying
problem.. but does this shed any new light on what the real problem may
be?
Is there still a chance to fix this right without re-imaging?

Thanks

Rolling back to a clean Windows install sounds like a good thing to do
(the
behavior you report is highly irregular).

All protected TV content that works on Media Center should likewise
play
on
the Xbox 360.

Yes, the Windows Media Connect still shows DRM "Cannot play "

I went thru with the DRM reset steps, rebooted, disconnected and
reconnected
the MCX, and now I have LOST some of the premium content that had
worked
before..thru the MCX (HBO for one) I am getting ready to rebuild the
MCE
box
from scratch to see if there is a problem with update/hotfix
sequencing.
I
am starting to wonder if watching protected content thru the MCX is
even
designed to work, or if the restriction is a "feature" of the design.
Some
of the folks I talked to at XBOX support seemed to think that what I
was
trying to do shouldn't work anyway, but they suggested working with
the XP
MCE support. Microsoft told me I had to call Dell support.. but I
have
not
called Dell.. :) Somehow I just don't think they will be able to
help..

It wouldn't hurt (though it will affect the licenses for any
recorded
premium TV content). Steps are here:

Before you do that though, if you look at your Xbox 360 under
Windows
Media
Connect, does it still say "Cannot play protected Windows Media
files"?

I made the change to Windows Media Player as suggested, and
ripped
a
track
from a CD. The MCE system told me that it had downloaded a
license.
On the MCX trying to play the track results in

AUDIO ERROR
Unable to validate security of your Media Center Extender
As a result, the Extender will not play protected media content.

So I guess this means the issue is more widespread than just the
TV
content.

Should I try to reset or clear my DRM environment?. I have no
licenses
for
purchased media that I need to backup or restore.

Thanks+

Also, do you have any non-TV protected content you could try
playing?
(e.g.
music tracks purchased from Napster or MSN Music)

If not, please try the following to confirm whether this is
specific
to
TV
or a general issue with protected content:
1) Open Windows Media Player and go to Tools --> Options
2) Select the Rip Music tab and check the "Copy protect music"
box;
click OK
3) Rip 1 track off of a CD; this track will be protected
4) Play the track you ripped in step 3 on your MCX; what
happens?

Note: you may want to undo step 2 when you're done...

Sorry not quite Fixed!!
(update: Only Partially !!FIXED!!)

I tried the #2 suggestion in the following link :

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/04/25/583494.aspx

After installing the April 2006 Update Rollup I rebooted..
Then I
deinstalled Media Center Extender and Media Center Connect
from
the
MCE
through Control Panel. Then I rebooted MCE again. I went to
the
360
and
disconneted from Windows Media Center and Windows-based PC
setting,
and
redid
the 360 MCE installation including new key code. etc.

This procedure added a few premium channels that play now
thru
the
Extender,
but not all of them do. There is still a problem with over
half of
them,
same
message about protected content not able to play thru the
360,
but
plays
find
on the MCE itself... Sorry for the false report!!

The April 2006 Rollup mentioned @

worked for me. I installed it, rebooted, then uninstalled
the
Center
Extender and Media Center Connect... Disconnected my MCE
computer
from
the
360 profiles for Media Center and Computer and basically
reinstalled
fresh
from the 360 perpective..
Now I am able to watch premium content thru the 360
extender
just
fine.

I tried the hotfix outlined below but it did not help. I
think
that
hotfix
would address the issue if I had local MCE issues playing
protected
content.
I don't have any problems locally with protected content
on
the
MCE..
only
with the 360 as an extender. All content aside from
protected
content
plays
fine thru the 360. The strange part is that even *some*
of
the
premium
channels will play thru the 360... but only a handful of
the
lineup..
(SHO
for example) Within Windows Media Connect, and selecting
the
360,
and
show
properties, under DRM it says plainly "Cannot play
protected
Windows
Media
files" My understanding is that this should say "Can
play
protected
Windows
Media files" and then things should work "right".. Then
again,
this
could be
working (or in my case not) as designed..

Hello,

I am having problems with playing any Premium Content
(TV)
thru
the 360
Interface. It all plays fine on the XP MCE platform,
but
only
unprotected
content will play thru the 360. I have spent about
three
days
trying to
figure out if this is a problem that can be fixed, or
if
this
is a
new
feature/design. I have called XBOX and Windows XP
support
and
am
basically
left with no solution. I have even called my Cable
provider.
Nobody has
a
solution.

I have Dell XPS 600, Happagauge 150MCE and all the
latest
Windows
Updates.
I
am running WMP 10. I understand there was a similar
issue
with
the
original
XBOX and the first extenders that came out.. and an
update
came
out. If
anybody else has struggled with this and found a
solution,
please
share
it!

Thanks++
