Re: MCE and Scanner Problems

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I think the problem may be that the Umax drivers are not digitally signed.
Umax says to install anyway. Win XP MCE won't let 'em install.

As to tinkering with the registry without someone holding my hand, I'm too
much of a coward.

Even without any of the Umax software installed, and after unplugging the
scanner and restarting, Win XP MCE recognizes the scanner and "thinks" it
has installed it. I think there is some kind of a generic driver that MCE
installs, but it won't get the scanner to budge.

The problem is that just changing permissions isn't enough. You have to
delete and start over.

Re "permissions" problem:

The first MS tech person I worked with on this issue had me go into the
registry. Software/Umax, I think it was, and change "permissions" to
"everyone" but that did not seem to do the job.

OK, I did some simple google and microsoft research. From what I am
seeing, this is NOT an MCE problem, it is a Pro problem (compared to
your prior XP Home). It seems to be a permissions problem associated
with using an account other than the administrator account to install
the software. I don't mean an account that has admin priviliges, but
the real admin account.

You'll want to do some searching, but it is common with imaging
devices -- scanners and cameras. The solution seems to be to uninstall
the software, edit the registry (?) to remove all traces of Umax,
restart the machine, install the software while logged in as
administrator WITHOUT THE DEVICE CONNECTED and then connect the scanner.

From what I see, the common thread seems to be installing the software
with the device already plugged in.

Good luck.

Thank you for your willingness to try to help me with my problem.

I have a Umax Astra 2200 scanner. It has worked perfectly, using Umax's
fully functional Vista Scan software. I originally used Vista Scan
with Win 98 SE. I upgraded to Win XP Home. I had to buy a CD from UMax
with new Vista Scan software, and a free Win XP patch from Umax. With
the new software, he scanner worked fine with Win XP Home.

In early April, I bought a new Gateway with Win XP Media Center
Edition. The Vista Scan software which had worked with Win XP would
not load. A helpful Umax tech patiently walked me through some steps to
get the scanner software loaded and we finally got it done, but when I
hit "Finish," I got this message:

"Cannot install this hardware.

"An error occurred during the installation of this device.

"The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this
device."

The Umax tech tells me that he has encountered this "class installer"
problem before and that MS has a fix which I should be able to get. My
Win XP MCE is an OEM version, and the vendor's tech support staff had
no clue about what to do. I went to MS "pay per incident" and they were
unable to help me. (No charge.)

So I decided to buy a new scanner (Microtek 400s) and queried them
about software compatibility problems and they responded that there
WERE some and they recommended not buying that scanner for use with
MCE.

I respect the views of those who say MCE is Win XP Pro but there must
be more to MCE than that.

I will welcome any suggestions.

Are there widespread conflicts between Win XP MCE and scanner
drivers? If so, does anybody know whether Microsoft is addressing the
problem?

I recently purchased a new computer with MCE and was unable to get my
Umax scanner to work. I called Microsoft Pay Per Incident and they
were unable to solve the problem. (No charge.) (Scanner
manufacturer's tech support tried to help, but couldn't.)

I selected a different scanner to buy and e-mailed the manufacturer
to determine whether there were conflicts between MCE and that
scanner. I got back the following report (refreshing for its candor):

"The Media Center Edition is not a widely used platform, and we have
had numerous incidents where the scanner doesn't work on that
platform. I would advise against purchasing this unit for Media
Center Edition."

Am I just unlucky or is this a big problem for a lot of folks?

Perhaps if you shared the exact problem, we could help. As mentioned,
mce is just Pro.
