Re: Best VCard for SDTV?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

IMHO none of the current NTSC tuner cards will give you TV at or near the
same quality as a standalone DVD player since the realtime hardware MPEG2
encoding chips on them anre no ware near as good as the hardware encoding
systems used to create DVDS that cost thoussands of $, It is only when
receiving the allready encoded digital signals such as with a HDTV tuner
card that you achieve the quality you are looking for.

On my SDTV the best video input is S Video. I do plan on having a HDTV in
the
next few years so I am looking at cards that will work for me in the
future
to. I am looking at the nVidia 7600 in concert with the nVidea Dual TV
tuner
:). So these on my THPC (see first post) should give me the same or better
quality than a stand alone DVD player? How much software picture tweeking
is
there to get the optimal look?

With sVideo out, you're limited to 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL). If
you
want higher resolution (and your TV supports it), you'll want to use the
VGA
or DVI output. What kind of inputs does your TV have?

Either the ATI or nVidia graphics cards should do what you want.
Personally
I like nVidia's drivers better...

When I play a DVD on my PC I want it to have the quality of a component
DVD
player at least. I have NO plans to use my PC for any serious gaming,
that's
what my PS2(3) is for. It looks like a lot of video cards have S-Video
out.
Though Compaq recommends external USB TV tuners I think I am going with
the
NVIDIA Dual TV MCE with the ATI Theater 550 MCE a close second. So here
are
my questions;

What is it going to take to deliver component DVD quality to my SDTV?
Is the Hardware or Software more important?
I like to keep in one family of brand name so what is the best NVIDIA
for
what I need?

I have; Compaq SR1750NX (mce, Athlon 64 (V) 3500+ 2.2 GHz, PCI Express
x16),
DirecTV, PS2, SDTV, Harmon Kardon ADP303 AC3 decoder, 6 channel
amplifier.
