Re: XP user problems with IE

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

The user logged on is "User 1" in this case, then comes along MCE and with
an Extender it is "User 2." The "User 1" already has IE in use, and "User
2" cannot access it. Even on regular XP, when you're switching "users" you
aren't really having two users active at the same time, except in instances
of Remote Assistance - and even then only a single user controls the
computer at a time. There aren't really any situations of dual users being
active at the same time. Extenders are accessing the MCE bits, not the
operating system itself where IE resides.

Chris-

Sorry, this distinction isn't clear to me. I've done this same test on my
other home server, which runs XP Pro.

1. Log on as User1. Start IE. Borwse a page or two, and leave IE open.
2. Using the Windows Menu, select "Log Off", then select "Switch User"
3. Log on as User2. Start IE. Verify that IE behaves correctly for User
2. Leave IE open.
4. Using the Windows Menu, select "Log Off", then select "Switch User"
5. Log back in as User1. Verify that IE continues to work correctly.

I've done this on Win XP Pro, and it's fine. If I try the exact same
steps
on MCE, I get the error message.

Chris, is there a different technology in use to switch users on MCE
versus
XP Pro? Is that what you're telling us?
"Chris H." wrote:

That's with Fast User Switching, which Media Center Edition uses for
Extenders. You're going into a different interface in your example, one
logging off. In MCE, both the user which is logged on (or default user)
is
active in Windows XP so the operating system is in use, and then the
Extender is the second user.

I have a second account on this (non-MCE) Windows XP Pro computer.

To test what Chris H. says, I just now started IE, then logged on to my
other account. I successfully started IE on that account, and came back
here to find IE still running OK. Then I went back to the other user &
found IE still behaving OK there.

I grant that there might be something here I am not understanding, but
it
looks to me as though two accounts can use IE simultaneously on a
single
computer running Win XP Pro.

No, it is an Internet Explorer issue, and going back to the original
post, yes, two separate users cannot use IE at the same time. It has
nothing to do with Media Center Edition.

Chris-

I'd say I'll have to side with the other users here- this is an
MCE-specific
problem. In fact, I just bought a new machine and it, too,
experiences
this
same issue. This BBS was the first place I looked for support
because I
know
this problem does not exist on other versions of XP. If you know of
a
related thread on another board, please post a link. Otherwise, any
chance
we can get an answer?

Thanks.

I suggest you post to a newsgroup where Internet Explorer is
supported.
This newsgroup supports Media Center Edition functionalities, not
IE.

I'm having the exact same problem with IE. In fact, the exact
same
scenario
causes a runtime error for windows explorer as well. Have you
solved
the
problem yet? If so, I'd really appreciate your input.
Thanks

Hi everyone-

Having problems with multiple users on XP trying to use IE. Two
separate
users cannot use IE at the same time (on the same computer). If
one
user
has
an IE window active and then we switch users, the second user
cannot
start a
new session of IE. We get an error that says something like
"Runtime
error".
Any suggestions, ideas? Thanks for the help!
