Somewhere on the card will be an fcc id, go onto fcc.gov and type in that
id. It will reveal the real manufacturer of hte card, their manual, maybe
even the drivers. Its the best way to look up unknown hardware when your
looking for drivers. Now sometimes this is printed on the board itself and
I dont recommend opening it up in this case.
If you do go the replacement route, I would strongly suggest checking out
avid, they are the super high end video editing software pacakges. Your not
getting avid, but what your doing is looking for their system specs. Avid
has tons of data that passes over firewire between devices, they only
recommend the rock solid, reliable, fully compatible cards. Sometimes they
are very specific on model number also, don't just go by brand.

Thanks for the suggestion Bryan. Unfortunately both the laptop PCMCIA and
desktop firewire cards we're trying to get this working on are no-name
brands
that were purchased at Best Buy and have zero contact info on them. The
laptop (Gateway Solo 9550) also has onboard firewire port but XP MCE
freezes
when the camera is plugged into it.
We've been able to use this setup for a couple years before SP2 was
released. Unfortunately wiping the drive and installing fresh copies of
Win
98SE, Win2k Pro, and XP Pro w/ and w/o SP1 have failed.
Because we've been able to get these working in the past and these
firewire
cards work properly when external hard drives are connected to them, I'm
highly suspecting this is a firewire driver issue steming around SP2.
I'm assuming your next suggestion is to purchase a firewire card that
comes
with it's own drivers, no?

I would suggesting trying to find out who make the firewire chipset and
see
if that manufacturer has a reference driver you could install. Its a
shot
in the dark but might work.

This is a widely documented problem with no well documented solution.
Most
digital video users reported problems with firewire connectivity after
installing SP2 for XP. It's reported that the firewire drivers that
came
with this update slowed the data transmission way down to 100 from 800
or
400
depending on your device.
Some have been able to reinstall the old drivers but this is tricky as
XP
replaces them with new versions upon each reboot. The source cab files
then
have to be renamed so XP doesn't find the new drivers to keep
overwriting
the
old ones.
Regardless I've tried everything and have been unable to get my Sony
TRV19
to work with several Windows versions now. Even going back to 98SE and
2000
have not worked while the camera shows connectivity via the IEEE1394
interface.
I've yet to scrub the rest of the posts here but if anyone has ideas
please
shoot them here. I'm about at my wits end with this after weeks of
work
on
this problem.
