Re: I'm Stumped on the stutters

Might also want to see this blog posting about info on how to get the latest
Avermedia drivers (if they aren't already posted on the web).

Updated AVerMedia TV tuner driver now available to fix Digital Audio Service
errors

It is apparrent that the problem is being recorded improperly since you
can take the files to another system and use iether MCE or WMP and get the
same errors. Since MCE apparently double buffers (keeps multiple buffers
active for receving and writing out the data it appears that somehow
during a show that the buffers get recorded out of sequence or not
recorded at all and at some point may actually get switched back again
befroe the end of the show.
Since at the beginning of each recording session the tuner card is told a
new to start receiving swssion on a certain channel and a new file is
created on the disk drive for the new show I am not surprised that that a
new show would record differently at first.
The AMD X2 driver problem was a know cause of this problem but you
apparently have the correct driver. You might try actually disabling one
of the CPUs in the BIOS or set the ehrcvr process afinity to only one CPU
to confirm that the buffer confusion is not caused by using two CPUs. If
it is be sure that you also have the latest BIOS update for your X2
compatible MOBO.
Timing of SATA interface signls is very crititcal and apparently this has
something to do with the buffer sizes being used by the AverMedia driver
also causing out of sequence or missing disk writes.
If your SATA drive is capable of NCQ(Native Command Queuing) make sure it
is disabled either with a jumper on the drive or with the SATA driver as
this also may be causing the bad writes. NCQ is a feature of SATA 300,
however, it has been implemented on many SATA 150 drives by the
manufacturers and some of thes had implementation difficulties.
The ATA controller listing in device manager should state what SATA
controller chip you are using.

Would this problem effect the recordiing or just the playback? As I
understand, the decoders come into play when playing back the file, but
not
recording it.

I have tried switching the mode when playing 'bad' files to no avail.

I have the ATI HDTV Wonder tuner and the Asus A8V Deluxe MoBo which i
believe, has the Via chipset.

Image controller chip (SI???).
NVIDIA Decoder Smart mode can cause problems if the decoder thinks it is
decoding Film and uses 3:2 pulldown when in fact it is receiving video
which
is why trying Automatic or Video Mode may eliminate jerkiness in the
output.

Hey Guys, thanks for the interest. I'll try to fill in the blanks for
all
the questions.

JW -
Yes I am running RU2 along with the update. I keep the updates coming
by
letting uSoft automatically update my systems.

My disc is a 300gb SATA I drive partitioned to 50/250 GB.

Yes the audio stutters too. It is actually more annoying than the
picture.

As far the different equipment on different shows is concerned, the
starting
of stuttering about 1/3 of the way through the show contra-indicates
that
diagnosis.

The CPU usage during playback is in the 20-40% range depending on
whether
I'm viewing it on the system that recorded it (AMD 3200+) or on the
system
in
my office (AMD x2 3800+). I don't think the CPU is the problem.

Both systems are using NVidia decoders (latest version ...195) and
Catalyst
6.2 drivers on Gigabyte 9550 cards. The decoder is set to Smart Mode -
Hardware Accelleration, VMR Default De-interlaceMode with Prefer
Overlay.
I
have tried the different modes in the past with no effect.

Jason

The main system (the one that recorded the show) has an AMD 3200+ (not
x2),
1gb memory, an ATI HDTV Wonder and a Gigabyte 9550 graphics card.

My other system does not have a tuner card but runs MCE. I can view
recorded TV by designating the folder as one of my Video folders.
This
system has a 3800+ x2 chip, 2gb, 2x160gb SATA I drives and the same
video
card.

Pete

The Video card handles almost everything I throw at it including the
first
third of the show that caused the problem. All I ever watch is HDTV
and
DVD's, so I don't think the card is the problem. Also, the same
stuttering
happens in WMP which uses different loading factors than MCE.

As far as the disc is concerned, the fact that it usually works fine -
and -
it doesn't get any worse if I watch the corrupted files on another
machine
over a wired ethernet.

Which mpeg decoder do you recommend ?

Thanks for the feedback,

Mike
