Thank you for your willingness to try to help me with my problem.
I was aware of the KB article. I understand that WinXP has a bare bones
vanilla scanner software.
The difficulty I have is that my scanner previously worked perfectly, using
Umax's fully functional Vista Scan software. By way of background: I
originally used Vista Scan with Win 98 SE. I upgraded to Win XP Home. I had
to buy a CD from UMax with new Vista Scan software, (version 3.55) and a
free Win XP patch from Umax. It worked fine.
A couple of weeks ago I bought a new Gateway with Win XP Media Center
Edition. Vista Scan 3.55 will not load. A very helpful Umax tech has been
walking me through the process of making the software work with Win XP Media
Center Edition, but then this "class installer" message shows up. The tech
tells me that he has encountered this problem before and that MS has a patch
which I should be able to get. I have not tried to contact MS because my
WinXP Media Center Edition is OEM. I have gone to Gateway tech support and
they seem not to have a clue about what the problem is, let alone how to
solve it. (My guess is they are a third-party tech support contractor and
not Gateway staff.)
If you have any thoughts about how to get this patch from MS I would like to
have them. The Umax tech gives me this is a "class installer" problem is a
specific problem which can be worked around.
(Win XP Media Center Edition reconizes the scanner and identifies it in
device manager when I unplug it and replug it.)

I recently bought a computer with WinXP Media Center Edition. I am
unable to install my scanner, which worked perfectly well with my
previous computer, which had WinXP Home on it. I have been working my
way through this with scanner's tech support staff, and we almost had it
done, but at the last stage, I got a message saying: "The class
installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device."
The scanner's tech support person says the "class installer" message
indicates a Microsoft error and that MS should be able to provide a
patch to fix it and that I should then be able to load the scanner
software.
If any of the readers of this board have any knowledge of this issue, I
would appreciate your help. My Windows XP Media Center Editition is an
OEM product and I intend to go to the computer vendor's tech support on
this problem but I am not optimistic about the outcome and will look
forward to hearing from any and all.
