Some OEM's offered the upgrade to 2005 for a limited time. Once that passed, they quit shipping it. The upgrade was not offered by MS, only through the manufacturers. You can buy MCE 2005 online and do the install yourself, but you can't upgrade, only clean installations. You'll also want to make sure you have any necessary drivers for your HP MCE to work with 2005.

Hello,
I have an HP Digital Entertainment Center z545 which is running XP MCE. I
would like to upgrade ot to MCE 2005. From what I have read here, it seems
that the upgrade needs to be obtained from the original OEM, in this case HP.
I have contacted HP who told me that the upgrade is no longer available
because Microsoft does not offer the upgrade any longer and HP is not allowed
to ship a copy. Can anyone clarify this?
Thanks!
-Michael
