Re: mce not working with dsl modem

Thanks Gino. I'm not on a network nor am I using a router. Not sure
what you mean by WPA/WEP, but I did shut down all of my
firwall/security software. All I'm doing is using the ethernet
connection from my CPU to the Westell modem. I'm using the same
process with this stand-alone computer and it works just fine. I've
gone in and created a new network connection to access my Verizon DSL
account, but once I hit "connect," it'll lock up tight. I was able to
access the internet a couple of times, but then I'll get the hourglass
in the lower-right of my curser, then it'll lock up.

Sorry I couldn't help, then.

WEP and WPA are two security schemes used in wireless local area networking.

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is older and less secure - it is routinely hacked by war drivers, I have read.

WPA (Wireless Protected Access) is newer and more secure, although I understand (by rumor) that it is hackable too.

Anyway, if you had a wireless router, it could have blocked your access if you didn't set up correctly.

The above triggered a thought: often, for high speed internet access, your ISP requires knowledge of the MAC address of your computer. Or of the modem... This is a problem similar to the IP address problem nentioned by Zaii.

MAC = Media Access Control, and it's a unique address hard-wired into every networking device (NIC, DSL modem, wireless card, on and on...). It's a 48-bit number usually represented as 6 pairs of hex digits, and you might be able to see it by going to a command prompt and typing the command "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes). Ipconfig calls it "Physical Address". Some routers (yes, routers again!) can spoof that address to solve this problem.

And I agree that for DSL you need the dial up program (PPoE). Routers can do that too.

HTH,
Gino
