What is the suffix of the attached email you are trying to play? Is that
suffix registered in XP to open the Media player in order to play a file
with this suffix/ If not then you need to update your file association
configuration.

I have downloaded the player recently AND I have cable connected to the
internet recently. Each time I try to open an attached e-mail file, the
player opens and says "Cannot play the file". I have changed all the
settings I it says to in the error message but to no avail. I have added
the
player to my firewall settings to be allowed to go to the internet. There
is
nothing left but frustration. Any help will be appreciated
