Re: network problem

What exactly is everything connected to the cable? Everything from
the cable modem all the way back to utility pole. What else is
connected to cable? Yes, connection from cable to earthing electrode.
What connectors, splitters, etc. What is on that cable?

OS has nothing to do with it. According to your own diagnostic
messages, the router is losing its cable connection. Don't go off
fixing things that are not broken - that only makes a problem more
complex - exponentially more complex. If the router is losing signal,
then that is where you daignosis begins. Don't start suspecting wall
switches ... or the OS. That modem has a signal indicator light? Does
it remain on constant?

Here is more info on the system

XP desktop -- using network 10/100 network card. Was not able to connect to
the web after lighting. Has surge protector. When I replaced the network card
I was able to get on the Web.

Dell laptop. Had an ethernet card hooked to router via CAT5. Was not able to
connect to the Web after lighting strike. Replaced the card with a wireless
card. Now all is OK.

HP Z557 MCE -- Control Panel network properties show the network card. The
network card is hooked up via CAT 5 to the router. BUT it says a cable is
unplugged. However I checked the connection and its ok. The green light is
on. I was able to connect to the Web on Saturday evening. Then on Sunday I
lost the connection. It seems I can connect about 20 percent of the time. To
verify whether I had a connection I typed IPCONFIG at command prompt. I got a
bunch of zeros one time. The other time when I connected it showed the
correct IP address.

MOTOROLA cable modem. I verified with Comcast that the connection was
working on their end. They seem to think its something with my equipment.

DLINK router -- I replaced the router with a wireless router. The MCE is
hooked up via CAT 5 on the back of the router.

XBOX -- Hooked up to router via CAT5. Installed XBOX media center extender.
Was able to watch TV that was hooked up to XBOX. Since the lighting strike,
the extender is not able to connect to the MCE. This device is connected to a
BASIC surge protector.

Since the problem on the MCE is intermittent is it possible the OS needs to
be reinstalled?
