Hello JW,
My lock up problem seemed to go away after I updated to 81.98 FW on my
GeForce 5200 card. But that only lasted few weeks. Now I am seeing constant
freezing problems again.
Here is one more observation.
1) The % of lock ups are more on the clock (e.g 4pm, 9am etc). Typically
when another show recordeing is kicking in to start recording. I have not
confirmed this but will keep a track of all lock up going forward. Today's
freeze was at 9:09 pm. And I had two programs that started recording at 9 pm.
I was watching previously recorded program on MCE Extender and extender froze
at 9 minutes after the recordings started.
2) Today MCE Extender on X-box froze. This was the first time it happened.
3) I tried your key sequence but it did not help. The key sequence does work
when the system is normal. It did not work when the system 'froze'. Looks
like it is safe to say entire PC is freezing up and not just the video card.
I have a VAIO which has LEDs indicating various functions that are active.
When the PC freezes, the only function active is 'TV' indicating MCE and
tuner are active.
Any more hints/ suggestions to debug the problem?
Thanks in advance.

Since the problem does not happen with MCX that means that the tuner and.
recording are not part of the problem since MCX has its own DVD Decoder and
graphics chips.
To find out if your graphics card or your entire PC is locking up you can
try to do a restart using just your keyoard.
Practice the following befoe the system locks up to be sure it works.
Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
Press the letter "U" key on your keyboard which will select the shutdown
dialog box.
Press the Tab key twice to go to select Restart.
Press the Enter key.
My power supply used to be too small for my 5700LE card and used the above
procedure to confirm the only the card was frezzing. Installing a bigger
power supply solved my problem.

What tuner card and drivers are you using?
NVIDIA GeForce 5200
What graphics card driver release are you usint? The latest is 81.89.
I just now updated to 81.98
What happens if you play back a recording with Media Player instead of
with
MCE?
I have not tried that. Did not know Media Player can play dr-ms files.
Does MCE itself lock up or does just your graphics card lock up?Since nothing works (keyboard, mouse, ctrl-alt-del etc) its difficult to
say
what is locking up. But one thing I have seen is that I don't see lock up
if
I am using xbox extender to see the video. Lockup typically happens on the
PC
itself.
Has the problem ever occured while watching Live TV?Yes problem has happend on Live TV as well, but since I was Live TV rarely
now-a-days difficult to say if it would be as frequent as recorded TV.

I have MCE2005 (no update roll up 2) with VAIO, GeForce5200 card. I see
that
during playback of the recorded TV, MCE2005 locks up frequently. Once
it
locks up nothing works (Ctrl+Alt+Del also does not work). My only way
out
is
hard reboot. Has anybody seen this problem?
I am suspecting disk fragmentation or disk is near full. But this is
not
unique I believe. Most of MCE users would have high fragmentation since
we
record and delete shows and also for uses who record lot of shows disk
would
be near full. I can't think of any other reason.
Thanks in advance for help.
