Since MCE is a single threaded app and does not use much CPU power that
should be fine unless their is some other program you want to run
concurrently with MCE that does use a lot of CPU power and thus gets a
benefit from a dual processor system.

I dread doing a repair install. Then I have to download the gazillion
windows patches and updates again. At least that's what I think will
happen
if my memory serves me from the last time I did a repair install. That'll
take a day in itself and I don't think I'm exaggerating. I think I'd
rather
live with the slower processor until Vista comes out next year. If you
have
any pointers on doing the repair install, I'd appreciate it though.

Do a repair install. That's your best option at this point... (no sense
wasting more time by letting the issue fester).

Jason,
Jason,
My worst fears have been realized. As I stated in my very first
message
in
this thread, I had downloaded and installed the latest AMD CPU driver
and
I
thought it a bit humorous that their latest driver for the dual core
processor was dated in 2004. As it turns out, I did indeed have the
correct
driver downloaded and installed when I had all of the locking up
problems
when starting Media Center. I have one other thought and that would be
to
install the dual core cpu again and immediately re-install the "latest"
AMD
driver again. I really hesitate to do that after all the grief I went
through the last time I installed the dual core processor. But it is a
shame
to be using it as a $500+ paper weight. Sigh.......................

Upon successful installation of the AMD version of the CPU driver, the
version should be 1.2.2 and the date should be Oct.26, 2004.

I believe I have installed the latest X2 XP driver from the AMD Web
site
and
it did not fix the problem. Any other suggestions. In the event
somehow
I
did not get the latest update, could you please tell me what the
date
of
the
driver is when you open up the device manager and look on the driver
tab
for
the AMD processor?
Thanks,

I've been running Windows Media Center 2005 since May 2005 with
only
a
fiew
glitches on an Athlon 64 3500+ processor and 2 GB of RAM on a MSI
KS8
Neo
4
Platinum motherboard. I recently upgraded to 4 GB of RAM and
changed
out
the
CPU to a Athlon 64X2 4400+ processor. What a nightmare. The
system
consistently froze up when opening Media Center. I have ALL of
the
latest
drivers and bios upgrades. Nothing helped. I spent over 24
hours
total
on
trying to trouble shoot to no avail. I finally gave up and put a
new
Athlon
64 3700+ processor in it and now it works fine. I tweaked the
SATA
drive
settings and had already installed the latest AMD drivers. Just
as
a
side
note. The "latest" AMD drivers are dated 2004 which does not
sound
very
current to me, but I suppose it's better than most of the windows
drivers
that are dated 2001. At any rate, if anyone has some insight on
how
I
can
put the 64X2 processor back in my system, please let me know.
I'm a
beaten
man at this point.
